Coyote with a hand gun

Finally got a coyote (big male) with my handgun, no rifle along. Ruger 44 mag Super Blackhawk 10 1/2", topped with a Leupold M8 2X extended ES at 113 yds, American Eagle 240 gn. using Prinos shooting sticks. Saw 4 in 3 days and this was the closest & only to come into handgun range with the FoxPro Fusion. If I had a rifle I could got 2 of the other 3. Ruger was sighted in for 100 yds

Outstanding!
I have one with the 7 1/2” bbl scoped with an early 2.5-7X28 Simmons EER, and a real hoot to shoot!
Well Done, Sir!

Nice shooting.

My handgun coyote kill was about 12 years ago. Nailed it with a Taurus Raging Bull 454 Casull while I was deer hunting. Not much to brag about since he was about 15 yards away and squatted to take a dump when I hit him. Oh, yes, the poop went a flyin'! LOL
113 yards is a good poke. Not sure I could've gotten close on that one because I would have been shivering too dang much!

Well played Cade. That is not an easy task at that range with a handgun! A lot of practice and a lot of passions. I'd be very proud of that one!

My self and a friend we both sighted in at 100 yards, he had a 500 Alaskan I think. We were going to hunt deer this season with hand guns but never got the chance so I thought why not give the coyotes a try. I used to hunt with a 8 3/8 S&W 44 mag years ago and got both deer and antelope with it then sold it (a big mistake) and a year back found this Ruger for a good deal and bought it complete with shoulder holster. Fun guns. I also have a Ruger New model Blackhawk 30 carbine that is a hoot to shoot. I think next year is a try at elk with a hand gun.

Great accomplishment - there is just something uniquely satisfying about hunting with a handgun.

Back in the 70's and 80's I hunted almost exclusively with a revolver, a S&W Model 27, 357 magnum - open sights. I was quite an accomplished pistol shooter in those days qualifying at Distinguished Expert (285x300) in Bulls Eye competition with both a rim fire (Model 17) and center fire (Model 14) revolvers. So I felt fairly confident to try handgun hunting.

I was a avid follower of Jeff Copper and Bob Milek, two of the most prominent handgun hunters at the time. So I began hunting ground hogs in western PA. The terrain was perfect for handgun hunting in that there were an abundance of rolling hills that allowed you to stalk within 50 yards of many hole locations. I became quite proficient at it and it was the most fun I ever had hunting. I advanced to fox hunting using a manual rabbit distress call and had a fair amount of success.

Finally in 1985 I decided to try my luck at deer hunting with a pistol. I knew that the only way I'd take a shot with a pistol if a buck appeared would be if I left my 243 Win in the truck and just took my pistol in the field. I connected with a 5 point, the only deer I ever shot with a pistol. And while not close to being the biggest deer I ever shot, it remains one of my fondness memories.

I have one of those 10-1/2" Super Blackhawks, blued, with the tapered barrels. They are really nice shooters, aren't they?

What do you like about shooting it? I have been tempted many times to get one in .30 Carbine.

Not really all that different but the bark there's just something about it. Mine is a 7 1/2" blue, Don't shoot it often. Still have a few old boxes of Western Cartridge Company Carbine, Caliber .30 M1 Lot # WCC6188

when I lived in Az, I killed coyotes and Javelina with a GP100, 6" and a Kimber Gold Stainless TARget in 45 ACP. Shots were close range coming to a Weems hand call. In the 357, the 125g sierra, REM, and WIN HP all did well with 17.8g of IMR 4227 or 18g of H110. In the 45 ACP, I shot 9.6g of AA#5 with a 185g Nosler HP.

I had to tape up the stainless on the guns with walmart's finest camo duct tape. I had several coyotes fleer off from the reflection.

I learned real quick that handguns are no where near the effective killers as a rifle. Trying to hit a coyote that is flipping and flopping around, gut shot at 35-50 yards is a challenge to say the least.

Back in the 80's, I killed a LOT of jack rabbits with a 44 Super Black Hawk with 180g Sierra hp with 26g of H110...they just fell over when hit...surprised me but dead is dead.

I let my dog lose from his leash ,got a cell phone call ,10 seconds later he was playing with a dumb coyote . Called my dog,he came and sat by me . Coyote sat down with eyes on my dog, giving me enough time to acquire a perfect sight picture with my concealed carry 9mm,put one right through his chest at 25 yards . Short howl and he was dead.
