Coyote food / bait

Bought a bag of Alpo dog food to throw out to bait up the coyotes. They will not touch it. Last time I used cat food and they liked it.
I wander if they just don’t like it or afraid of it?
I’m going to try some dry cat food and see if they like it.
I know they will not touch sardines or any flavor.

I got a chuckle out of this. On the West Slope of Colorado, the dog, dog food, cat and cat food are all on the menu for the scoundrels. I think they will eat whatever doesn’t eat them first. FYI they do not like mountain lions or people.... or anything that smells like people.

Dang buzzards and we got lot of them, get into the carcass.

Exactly! The farmer across the road that lets me hunt his property put out a deer carcass and a pig head and I set up a trail cam. In spite of having coyote tracks within 50 yards they never approached the bait. Most night pics were deer checking it out along with couple of coons and a skunk. Buzzards, crows, and hawks stripped it all clean within two days of finding it.

I killed a nice male a few weeks ago and I think the rest of the coyotes are educated. May have to wait on the pups to be born and shoot them.

Meat scraps "sweetened" with antifreeze. They gulp it up but never seem to come back for seconds.
I hear Golden Marlin works on them as well and coons :) I’ve never used it but I know people who have and that stuff will wipe them and coons out in a hurry. Highly illegal but highly effective to.

“Golden Marlin” that’s hilarious. I wouldn’t do that to to an animal. Heard it was a bad death. Rather shoot em. I’ve heard sponges soaked in bacon grease work also.

Put your scraps from deer season in a pail, pour water in the pail and freeze it, you now will have a popsicle!! Works great and they can’t run off with it!!

Years ago I went to Texas with a custom rifle builder who was friends with Harold Broughton. We stopped in to seem Mr. Harold and I was invited to go with him to check kills from cyanide guns he had out (the county paid him to kill coyotes). Awesome to see - he lined them up at the rancher's gate so he could see the results and I saw a dozen or more at one gate.

But, I asked him what he used to bait the felt washer on the cyanide gun and he would take a gallon glass jar, put meat scraps in it, seal it, and set it in the sun until it liquefied. Then he used a paint brush to "paint" it on the felt washer that was on the trigger of the cyanide gun. It must have worked pretty good because each dead coyote had tried to pull a felt washer up and eat it.

I just bought a 16 oz jar of Cavens Hiawatha valley bait. Made with rodent meat and other “tasty” stuff. Gonna try it and see if it will lure them out. I guess they like stanky things to eat.

Get a metal trash can, lay it on its side and throw some grain and an old towel in it. Mice will take over. When they do just stand it up. You have just captured a supply of coyotes favorite food. They seem to like them better if they get a little ripe.
