Coyote call

Do you guys normal start with howl or distress calling? I know a lot of times it depends on different things. But normally in a new unhurt place which
thanks

Distress this time of year. February if first few stands are dry then ill try some howls since thats about breeding time. Also around my parts about September can try some young pup sounds. That usually gets the youngsters to come in if the distress aint workin.

Howls are sure different:

Interrogation
Female invitation
Young male Interrogation
Agressive, I want to fight howl/bark

60% of the coyotes we kill are yearlings or coming two year olds

Watch your scent direction as a wind blows it
Be able to see down wind when you set up your stand
use an attractant where legal to do so

I have used decoys when hunting in Mexico. I sprayed rabbit urine on a blue Buggs Bunny, coyote ran in so fast and grabbed Buggs I had no time to even get the gun up. I killed him around 300 yards as he was trying to choke down Buggs. I learned to wire down the decoy to a bush. I killed a couple pulling on the stuffed animal. I ran out of Buggs Bunnies, went to a white hand pupped, "Lamb Chops". I stuck Lamb Chops on a stick with rabbit urine sprayed on it, that one disappeared also, as I did not use enough twists on the wire that was holding it down. I learned to not put the decoy within shot gun pattern range of the caller, My caller has multiple bb holes and dents in it. My first remote control call was around 1985, a friend shot the caller as a coyote stuck his nose to the caller, 12ga 3" #4 Buck at 30 yards.

Calling with E caller, Mix things up. Jack rabbit, then short wounded pup indicating that there is a fight going on, very short on the wounded pup. Wait a while.

Wear a camo face mask and camo gloves, coyotes really pick up our white skin real fast. Again, use an attractant where legal to do so, more parts per million than your own scent. Don't wear the same boots out hunting that you pumped gas standing in as they can smell your track from 10 feet at least. Scan with your eyes, not turning your head back and forth, they will pick up on the movement way out.

1. Coyote must be close enough to hear the call, coyote can have large territories(several square miles), know where to call.
2. If coyote smell/see you walking,game over.
3. Never have I killed/skinned a coyote with no body fat, they all eat well in my area.
4. I spot and stalk a lot of coyote during the day, often I have gotten within shooting range and decided to try calling them close, they don't even stand up. Just the ears move and locate you perfectly and when the head does move the coyote is looking right in my scope. I like those head shots.
5. I have called coyote from over 300 yards with a squeaker(mouse) they have incredible hearing.

I don’t have the mindset that electronic callers or mouth calls work better than the other. I’ve used them both with a lot of success. If I’m calling where coyotes get called a lot and are educated I have more success with mouth calls much of the time, if I’m where coyotes haven’t been called that much I use the fox pro more. The biggest advantage for me of an electronic call is no movement, the controller can be held in your lap, the mouth calls I use require me to lift my arm when I’m calling.

One thing that has helped me over the years is not getting stuck in a mental rut and using the same sound or call over and over if it’s not producing. I mix it up a lot sooner than I use to when the calling is slow.

One of the best times to call coyotes around here in northern Arizona is Feb as the mating season starts. Rabbit, bird, mouse sounds have been heard by about every coyote around and aren’t very effective compared to earlier in the year but if you learn coyote language, howls, barks, yips etc it can be a great time to kill big educated yotes. Their ego and horniess gets the best of them, just like it does a lot of us humans.

E-calls and decoys in the thick stuff.

When I'm calling in the thicker stuff I rely on distress through the whole fur season.

I finally got out again today and am hunting an area I've never hunted before. I made two blank stands in more open country and the moved down in the mesquite bottom.

One minute the coyote comes in out of the mesquite about seventy yards out. I let him come in until he stopped , put the crossbars right on his.chest. CLICK, I must have forgot to chamber a round. I throw the bolt and rammed the next round into the back of the first, and the coyote is standing there looking at the decoy. I cleared the two and jacked another into the chamber and again CLICK. Coyote is still standing there but starting to look my way. I clear that round and looked at it and realized I loaded the 223.mag with 222s. I grabbed a round out of the butt bag, got it chambered and coyote was still standing there. I finally put a 62grnSP.in his chest.

All this took place at 28 paces, who says decoys don't work.

Time to go home I think I used up all my luck for today.

Distress. If you’re having problems getting them in your either not in range or they are getting lots of pressure. One thing I’ve learned over the years is setting up closer to main highways is very productive. My theory is that most people try to get away from roads and over look that allot of coyotes might be taking advantage of the free roadkill buffet. Or maybe there’s just so many coyotes out there you can go almost anywhere and kill one.
