Cost to rechamber Savage barrel and recommendation on Milwaukee gunsmith

I purchased a slightly used 6BR barrel from another member of this site some time ago. It's a take off from a factory Savage F-Class; so 30" long with a 1-8 twist. I had planned on getting set up for loading 6BR, but after thinking this over quite a bit I've come to the realization that I'd probably come out way ahead by rechambering to a standard 243 Winchester, which I already have dies for and lots of brass.

I have other reasons for making the switch too, but that's not really what I want to discuss. What should I expect to pay to have a barrel rechambered? And might anyone recommend a gunsmith in the Milwaukee area to perform this work - perhaps somewhere in the Milwaukee-to-an-hour-north-of-Milwaukee region?

Thank you!

To rechamber it to 243 you will have to shorten the barrel and rethread it as the body of the 6 BR case has a larger diameter than the 243. I can tell you that I would love to run into a 6mm barrel with an 8 twist though, I would rechamber it to a 6-284. I have 2 of them now, but neather has an 8 twist and I want one that will handle the 105 VLD bullets. OH yea, the rechamber to 6-284 is just running it the reamer.

Keep the 6BR chamber. If you don't want the 6BR sell it and get a custom barrel.

The 6-284 would be great, but that would put me even further behind as far as cost. Remember that I already have a ton of 243 Winchester brass and the dies.

I wasn't aware that the 243 had a narrower body than the 6BR. Is that because of the body taper of the 243? Could I avoid having to shorten and rethread the barrel by going to a 243 AI? I'd have to get new dies though, which is a bummer. Even if I did have to shorten the barrel and rethread it, I'm not too worried about that because it's 30" long right now.

That is an option I've considered of course. Before I did though I wanted to know what the price would be to rechamber. Obviously each gunsmith will vary, but I thought if other people could chime in with what they expect to pay for a rechambering job I'd have a good baseline to determine whether it would be cost effective.

Still looking for any recommendations on a good gunsmith in the north-of-Milwaukee area too. Not only for this potentially but for several other little projects.

I charge a $150 to install a barrel. If you have the barrel re-chambered make sure to have the crown redone also. Sorry I don't know any gunsmiths in that area. Brian.
