Corrected details - WA 10 Round magazine limit

Correction: A substitute bill without possession limits passed.

If the legislature (WA) passes the current bill, and I can no longer have magazines greater than 10 rounds loaded, even within my home, what would you recommend for:

Defensive carbine? 5.56/223 is a good cartridge, but 10 rounds makes it less practical, especially for a use case where one would actually use a carbine in self-defense. What other cartridge(s) would be better (16" barrel)? I still want to have some reach with the rifle (600 yards), but want enough delivered energy to stop a fight quickly. I have a bit of experience with shotguns, but they aren't the end-all for all use cases.

Sidearm? I use 9mm currently to have commonality with the wife's sidearm. I've shot 40 S&W for years and honestly don't care for it. The recoil is too snappy. I actually shoot a 45 better. Been shooting an M&P for years with great success. Is the M&P 45 as good as the 9mm version?

Hopefully the bill in question doesn't pass, but I want to get ahead of it if it does.

I'd go with 6.5 grendel or 6 ARC for a 16" barrel. Should get you to 600 no problem. And imo has a little more knockdown power than a .223...

And hopefully it doesn't get passed!

Back in the day, we called them Israeli clips. The law reads
10 rounds per magazine. Nothing say's you can't stack
mags side by side. and upside down. I have an AR stock
that holds a spare magazine. It's very fast to dump an
empty and grab that one.

Keep the 5.56/.223. As Fuj suggested, tape a pair of magazines together, same forward direction, but inverted vertically. If for some reason that is also illegal, just keep several 10-rnd mags filled and ready to go, and practice changing mags regularly.

I prefer the M&P in 9mm... I have dropped two hogs in their tracks with a 9mm.. One was in the road in front of my house and had to fie up the tractor and move it.. lol..

Not a problem with the limit on 10 round per magazine. Just have a couple extra ones, ready to reload with. More often than not you are only going to be firing 1-3 rounds anyway in a home defense situation.
But if it should develope into a full blown fire fight, the extra magazines are there.

What are you defending against?
If SHTF like are country is ever invaded by extraterrestrial aliens or Canada, or Yellowstone blows up, or a comet or asteroid hits the Earth, or Bigfoot is tearing at the door, or any multitude of reasons.

The 6.5 Grendel is a better choice in that the cartridge has been factory loaded for about ten years now so it will be more available then the new 6mmARC. Although the 223 is way more available, and heavy bullets of 68-75 grains have some respectable energy. A rifling rate of twist of 1:8-1:7 will still allow for most 55 grain FMJ bullets to be used without them blowing up from being over spun. I’ve shoot many of handloaded Hornady 55 gr FMJ which group 1 MOA 100-300 yards from a scoped AR15 with E.R.Shaw barrels.

I'm in CA where having an AR with a bullet button and 10 rounds is a non starter as a defensive tool. I like the Beretta 1301 tactical with the pistol grip and extended mag for non-predictable issues

Have you ever considered the possibility that people with bad intentions might have rifles too? Do you think they only attack at arm's length?

Being ready for a potential engagement, that you hope never occurs, is the first step in preventing that engagement.

Not all cases of self defense happen the way we would imagine them. Sometimes bad people know how to use cover and concealment. Having the right tool, immediately at hand, is the answer.

Oh the Constitution prohibits expost facto laws.. Hang on to your magazines.. Just tell anyone that asks you got rid of them.
Oh, I'm grandfathered. I just can't take them out of my home except to go to a licensed gun range, but then they have to be transported unloaded and in a locked container...

It looks like the bill is going to Inslee's desk. I'll be without my rights very, very soon.
