correct primer choice VS less correct primer choice

Only thing I would suggest is not to shoot multiple dots sprinkled left and right if possible if shooting from bags, if a guy is not diligent the difference in the bag bind as you swing left and right will affect how a gun once to group.

Interesting...I never considered that as I do most of my testing at 300yds but still requires a swing R/L that could be significant when splitting hairs on groups. It would be one reason to shoot a single centered aimpoint on an e-target so the tracking should be identical from test group to test group.

Thanks

Mikecr, firing pins stop on primers, varying protrusion itself doesnt change how deep a primer is hit, what it does do is change effective firing pin fall. Meaning, if you reduce protrusion .010" you have increased effective pin fall .010". I would bet you will see the same effect fine tuning your pin fall.
I know this, and believe it's what I described. Changing released firing pin protrusion changes pin distance to strike(from cocked), thereby affecting striking force.
And it's finer and more independent to adjust only the pin rather than a trigger hanger for this(which messes with timing).
Some go to different pin weights or different springs, but these are not fine adjustments either.

Nature Boy I would try a tenth more powder with the BR-4's!

Joe,

I tried it and you were right. Bumped up 0.10gn and got this result for 5 shots at 100 using the BR4s

2,919 FPS, SD 5, ES 13

I’ll give it a try at the next mid range match. Thanks!

Has anyone ever put together a list of which primers tend to be most compatible with which powders, or are there just too many other variables in play? That would be a very handy resource for someone just getting started in reloading.

there is a lot at play for sure, but that's half the fun in reloading is compiling data all the while your out shooting your tests. I think sometimes it is good not having outside influence as it can hold a person back.

IMG_5622.JPG Not sure on the best primer for the powder
Here is my experience the other day.
Have a new open gun in 6.5-47 lapua
Started load development, The right side of the target was 3 different primers.
All was 5 shots at 100 yards. The 40.2 group I pulled the lowest shot

Looks like you have several options to play with, even the less favorable groupings with a little adjustment may give similar results
