Corn cob media?

Do you have a Grainger or other industrial supply shop near you? I would buy the 14/20 sized (no particle will pass through a #20 screen, all pass though a #14 screen). Some might hang up in the primer pocket, but not much. Think abrasives supplier.

The polish that Midway or Cabelas sells works as well as the other suggestions above.

If you're really cheap you can wash and reuse the corn cob, I think Micaluk (sp?) had a video on youtube showing his drying method. It will grow, slightly, after getting wet. Use Dawn dishwashing liquid and warmer water if you need to remove lanolin or other sticky case lubes left from the cases.

The last time I looked in a pet store was years ago, all they had was the larger corn cob. I figured it was good for larger caliber straightwall cartridges, as it will hang up in smaller diameter bottleneck case mouths.

Kind of on a side subject, if I was to use corn cob media it would be for the polishing/buffing last tumbling cycle.. I would also put keresene in it or minerial spirits to prevent the cases from ever tarnishing.... It would be a process like this: First I would initially tumble in walnut to clean out all the hard to get carbon.. I wouldn't use stainless unless a customer requested it, because of stainless cleaning the necks up way to much.. You will get better release on the bullet with that carbon layer left in the neck.. After handling the bullets during all the other prep steps I would then finally use the corn cop tumble with keresene or minerial spirits to help keep my brass shiny even in the hands of the customer... You can also add some NuFinish to the corn cob media at the same time as the keresene/minerial spirits... If I know I have a customer that takes a lot of pride in the annealing marks then I would adjust my steps so as not to polish out the marks in the end..

I tried making my own media with a food processor today and didnt work well. Put it in harbor freight tumbler with a dab of metal polish out of curiosity( maybe thats where i went wrong) and it looked worse after 30min than just wet tumbling with just water, lemon juice and cascade. Edit: corn cobs nasty hard on food processor. Bogged it down several times with grating disc.

I use both walnut and corn cob. I prefer the corn cob as it gets the cases more shiny and doesn't jam up the primer pocket as much.

When I run out of my walnut and corn, I am going to try whole dry rice, saw it somewhere and worked pretty well.

Had a couple hundred moly coated bullets. I don't shoot them. Read on here a few weeks ago about cleaning them with rice. I tried it, took 2-3 hours but it did take the moly off very well.

All you need for a do it all home made media is 50% corn cob 50% walnut mix with a little keresene and NuFinsh..

Left it in the vibrator tumbler while I mowed my leaves (lawn) and came back to nice shiny pieces of brass.. I feel it did a excellent job..

I'm not keen on additives to keep the sheen on my brass, for benchrest work I feel that the possibility of false pressure signs is not worth the extra bling..Just my two cents..

Some may frown or laugh but tumbling with toilet paper really put a shine on some old 3006 brass in rock tumbler. No kidding. Read it on the net some where and decided why not. No im not too broke to buy good media just playing.

I like shiny brass, I know it's not really needed but I'm funny like that.

I use the corn cob media I picked up at Cabellas, Lyman brand I think. I put in a squirt of Meguiars canuba wax and a small dab of Mother's mag wheel and aluminum polish since that's what I had on hand in the garage. Works great, really puts a nice shine on the cases.

Get mine from Ebay. Fellow named James Kelly from Edgewood, MD. It is a walnut//corncob mixture. Add some mineral spirits each time you use it and it lasts a long time. Best stuff I have ever used. His e-mail is jimkelly01@comcast.net and his auction ID is jimkelly101 on ebay.
