Corn cob media?

Guys that use corn cob media when tumbling their brass, Is it something you can just pick up at a feed store or is it different?

Ray

I'm sure one can get corn-cob media through various sources.
in my experience, the best I've used is the bulk packaged stuff from Cabelas (don't know where they get it from). I like the smaller size grind as it reduces the amount of trapped media in primer pockets and flash holes.

If you find a good source, I'd like to hear about it. I'm always looking for a cheaper way to do things.

One of our club members was getting it from a feed mill. It came in 40# bags though. He was selling it to fellow members at his cost. For people that didn't want a full bag, he would also sell gallon ziplock bags full. If you find it in only large feed bags, you can always split it with other shooters.

I've never purchased through a feed store because I hoped the 'corn cob media' from say Midway would not attract rodents. It at least is not sold as feed and so far so good.
I very much doubt I have gone though 40 pounds since 1963 so never thought of it as an expense to be concerned about.

I use PetCo walnut media.. It cleans the hard to clean stuff up good after 1.5hr tumbling... Then after handling the cases during reloading steps you can use a final polish with the corn cob to get it really shiny... Check PetCo, they may have all types of media under the "animal bedding" section or just ask...

I was thinking I would cut wait time. I see some of it has additives for brass

OP,,if you use corn cob media from the feed store you should activate it with two tables spoons full of 1/2 mineral spirits and 1/2 liquid Turtle wax (or whaever your fav wax is)...Roger

You can add your on additives like NuFinish car polish! Or, purposeful cartridge polish which smells the same.. Just be sure it doesn't have ammonia in it and you will be great!

Yep, minerial spirits or keresene work wonders on storing cases away!! Everyone wants to know what you do to your brass!

I use both walnut and corn cob. I prefer the corn cob as it gets the cases more shiny and doesn't jam up the primer pocket as much.

When I run out of my walnut and corn, I am going to try whole dry rice, saw it somewhere and worked pretty well.

I see Petco is $5 for a bag of corn cob bedding, except it would cost me $60 in gas to get to the nearest Petco.. Maybe Tractor Supply carries it.. Probably will just order a jug of the ready mix stuff..

Look Sand Blasting Supplies in your yellow book or Google it and see if there is one in your area. They will probably have corn cob grit, walnut shell grit, ... in a number of sizes by the 40 pound bag. The last time I bought a 40 it was like $15, a good deal.

I have two tumblers; initial tumbling is done in walnut and after I do my case prep I tumble in corn cob. Every now and then I throw a cut up used dryer sheet in the corn to clean it up. I don't care about shine, so I don't typically add any kind of polish.
