Coriolis and Ballistics-Flat Earthers Beware!

Just check the checkbox in your favorite program and let it apply the correction.

But you have to take the time to apply the direction you are shooting which means you must manually input it or turn your phone to the direction of the shot and capture the direction. If you don’t then the calculation is meaningless or at its worse adds a correction in the wrong direction. It’s just not a simple flip the switch and it’s done correction. You can argue it doesn’t take much time to do but under pressure hunting with its pretty insignificant correction IMO it’s not worth fooling with.

FYI - "The practical impact of the "Coriolis effect" is mostly caused by the horizontal acceleration component produced by horizontal motion. There are other components of the Coriolis effect. Westward-traveling objects are deflected downwards, while eastward-traveling objects are deflected upwards.[43] This is known as the Eötvös effect. This aspect of the Coriolis effect is greatest near the equator."

Every time someone mentions flat earth I ask them to explain how the coriolis effect works on a flat earth. I have yet to have anyone answer me.

I've never heard of the term "Eotvos Effect". I wonder who uses it? Maybe a Physics term? The Wikipedia page says that it is due to centrifugal force. I'll dig into it. Thanks for the hint.

I don't like the "deflection upward/downward". It sounds like bullet jump that happens at the barrel. The apparent mass applies over the entire trajectory. It is usually very small and within the "noise" of the drag data.

I rarely shoot beyond 200 yards anymore, so Coriolis doesn't affect me. That said, I really and truly suck pond water at math beyond +-*/. Therefore, I am totally lost after your title line.......

I'm afraid that top 1K benchrest shooters that are capable of shooting really small are not really polluting their brains with Coriolis effect on the other hand sniper wannabees definitely are
it could be pointed out (intended) that benchrest shooters strive to shoot small under constant conditions while snipers want to shoot accurately under somewhat unknown conditions....

I will let you know if that helps me after my eyes quit spinning around in my head.

The art of ballistics is to know what science can or cannot be ignored and still get the shot on target. I've always heard that Coriolis was critical but honestly it really isn't for most rifle fire. It's like "overstabilization" and "bullet jump". Sometimes they are important and sometimes they are not.

If you are just doing trial and error to get on target a then a lot of these topics really don't apply.

THINK it in ;) :)
