copper remover post some weeks ago

some weeks ago, there was a post about copper removers, in it a discussion about a product developed in Europe, military use, that was now available in the US. Supposed to be very good

not amonia based, my fuzzy memory thinks Gunslick? the US distributor, do any of your remember the product?

There was a discussion that involved Wipeout foam, liquid and accelerator. I use all three and am happy. The foam works best on copper and it will take it all out. Seems not to damage metal or stock finish or paint. Is not good to get on your hands but has not killed me yet. Very little odor. Gunslick and several others have their own version of the product. Wipeout has a handy applicator tube and tip that is a must. Always shoot in the foam from the breach until it trickles out the muzzle. A tight fit of the applicator tip to the chamber neck is critical.

I have used just about all of them. The fastest I have tryed is kg12, nest is TM solution. I use kg12 while breaking in barrels, tm solution in factory barrels that foul, and hoppes 9 in match barrels.

Though not related to the thread your searching, this information I found informative as well and does support KG12 which is not ammonia based. At least they were trying to be somewhat scientific about it.

I've been having excellent results from this new product. I'm not connected with this product in any way.

Check out the results of comparative tests.

I work with Olin-Winchester and they foul barrels quite bad...I have seen them spend 8 hours cleaning copper out of a barrel until KG12 came into their shop. It disolves copper faster and better than Sweets 7.62, Montana Extreme, and a few others. I have seen rifle groves complete full of copper and abuse of barrel fouling and KG12 has been the best for removing copper fouling. I have seem them fill a barrel full of KG12 let it sit for 20 minutes and the copper wipes out of the barrel than would take 4 hours scrubbing. The worse bullets are tracer bullets that cause this fouling. A test requires 800 rounds fired without cleaning the barrel of a M16A2. The bullet jackets are made from a copper cladded steel jacket.

Jeff, KG12 is one of the few cleaners I have purchased more than once so I must have liked it. KG12 appears to be more effective in a warmer environment and indeed this applies to a few of the copper cleaning products on the market so trying to copper strip a barrel in a cold garage in January is never going to be as effective as in a warm shop, in fact some copper solvents will freeze at well above the point that water freezes, something to be mindful of. Also I would strongly urge anyone using KG12 to wear gloves or make sure they wash their hands well after use as it has a very high pH and this precaution should really be applied to all gun cleaners however when I tested KG12 it came out at the top for pH.

Hmmmmmm....so it is acidic..

Nitric acid eats copper......fast...but reacts very little to stainless. Not a chemist but in the compact disc industry, the shiny part is an alluminum film deposited by a plasma charge. The non metallic areas are "masked" off by a copper ring with a stainless edge. When the aluminum builds up, it is removed in a caustic soda bath witch eats the aluminum off. Then the process is rinsed in nitric acid to stop the process and prepare the copper. It strips the copper real quick but does nothing to the stainless......

Interesting.....

But so far the accelerator and foam works fast for me. Might have to try KG12 though....

Wipe-Out Accelerator and Patch Out, cleans everything fast!! Have not used a brush in 2 yrs. have a Hawkeye that sez so all best dogdude

In my experience, the above mentioned all work just fine, no difference at all in a custom barrel. Outside of that, wow, it all depends on how much time you got. I value my time a lot, so KG12 is my choice, it's based on 20 years of scrubbing and trying to get the copper OUT. ARs, K31, M96, Mausers, Mosins, etc. It's not only better, it is a lot better. On the other hand, it did nothing in my TRG22, and I mean , nothing. Worst copper attracting steel/barrel, I have ever seen. Yes, it is getting a new Krieger as I type. If you have ran a cleaning rod over the cheek piece of a TRG, then you'd know. anyways KG12 it is!
