copper plated

Why are some .22 rimfire bullets copper coated? I see that most of the better ammo is uncoated (except wax), so why do some manufactures even do it? I am getting ready to switch from some high velocity to low velocity (match type) ammo and so I cleaned my barrel. I notice some small shiny flaky material coming off on the patches. Is this copper flakes? Thanks.

I do not know why there are lead vs. plated, except for barrel leading. However, i do know that when switching between plated SuperX and lead T22 my 513 T goes crazy. It takes either a good cleaning and "brreak-in" or at minimum, 25 rounds of the "other" before it will group again. I decided to just stick with my dwindling supply of T22.

... When I was a kid, a very long time ago, Remington ran a series of ads in Outdoor Life, Field and Stream, etc. that showed the contents of a young boys pocket on a night stand - penknife, some change, string, lint, dirt and a half dozen or so copper plated bullets ....
Yeah, I remember that ad. When I learned the dangers of carrying rim fire ammo in a pocket I was disappointed in Remington's use of that practice to support it's "clean ammo" image. Years later, after I'd started teaching hunter safety, that add jumped out of my memory every time I went over safe ammo handling practices with the kids in my classes. It still does ....
