Cooper Update

I sent an email to Cooper/NHC asking about the future of the rifles we've come to love and covet and got a response today. It's posted under "Cooper (NHC) Responds" in the main message board here.

Nasty thangs...... o_O o_O o_O
Wilson barrels have served me well over the years. l bought an early Winchester Model 70 Coyote from the original New Haven Plant. lt was a two tone varmint model in 223Rem. Blued action with a 24 inch Wilson barrel with 1 in 9 twist. l mounted a Leupold VX2 6-18 with fine crosshairs. l took it on a couple quickie 2day prairie dog shoots before my son ''STOLE'' it. His only rifle, he kills a couple South Carolina Whitetail with it using Winchester White box 63gr big game ammo every year. His only prairie dog trip was in 2019 near ldalou Texas. His longest kill was 546yds using PPU 55gr factory loads. That's 100yds longer than l have killed one after 30+ years shooting them! He is not a handloader.

To be fair my Cooper 22ppc has taken its share of fake wood at the local VFS matches complete with its Wilson barrel. Quite a few pds have died cursing their luck facing my Wilson barreled Coopers out past 500 yards too. I just thought if Cooper tried perhaps they could have struck a deal with a premium barrel maker for a bit better product. Next time I need to buy a barrel with my money you can bet it will be Krieger or Bartlein ❤️

When Cooper rifles Co was JUST starting up Dan Copper and his wife had a table at a Billing gun show.
Some of his first rifles were chambered in .22CCM . He had samples of some ..22 CCM cases he was having made. At that time the cases were lathe turned. I talked Dan out of a couple sample case and we talked about his new COOPER rifles he was building. His first rifles use Wiseman barrels. Some of the later rifles I heard used Shilen . I’m not sure what else they used before going to Wilson barrels.

No Wilson here !!!
I got rid of that worm groove, voids, pitted thing!!
This Kreiger is a whole lot better !!!View attachment 1644990View attachment 1644989most don’t realize the potential of full bedding the action, and adding pillars-I’m not a wood guy-
So I ordered a B&C stock and the build began-

Wish the M38 would come back or the single shot M21- as they was cartridge specific actions/ or sized to the the smaller cartridge design- makes great everyday rifles-

I've looked at literally hundreds and hundreds of Wilson barrels in the borescope. I've had lots of customers look at my Wilson barrels with the borescope. I've never seen any of those defects that you're describing in a fresh . barrel from Wilson. Maybe Cooper let him sit around for a couple years and let them rust or something like that. Wilson doesn't ship barrels with those defects in them. At all.

Gary, brother, you scored in the wood department! Very nice!

Not sure exactly who's barrels are on my four Coopers, two M38's and two M21's, but as each one shoots right at .2" with it's pet load, I don't give a rats ass who's barrel is on it.

But I do know when one goes south, it will be replaced with a Pac-Nor, as they've always done me right for many years and every rifle that wears one shoots very, very well. My Cooper M38 20VT now has right at 5,200 rounds downrange, and as it still shoots those dinky groups and launches chucks and grass rats in fine fashion, not sure how much longer it'll last, but it's still going strong as I write this. Is it a Wilson barrel? Probably.

I sold a gorgeous unfired 17 Ackley hornet and a 17 M4 last year. Still have a 22-250 a TAC 20 and a 17HMR all Montana rifles.
