Cooper Phoenix 6mm Br?

I'm looking at getting a Cooper Phoenix with a 14 twist barrel. Anyone have one or any advice about the gun or twist rate? Thanks

If you're only going to use bullet 70 Gr or less at ranges to 300 that would be a great choice. If you want to shoot the gun further using say 100 + Gr. bullets go to a faster twist.

ChasinElk ,

Most 14 tw will shoot up to 80 gr. I shoot 70 gr BK to 700 yds +. My shooting buddy Killed a Groundhog at 565 yds tonight with 14 tw and 70 gr BT.

A men, marks. You can kill small to medium sized critters out a long ways with a 6br in a 14twist. Go for it chasinelk, if you want it for a 300yrd target rifle and for varmit hunting out to 600yrd ranges it will work just fine. if you are looking to shoot big game with it,no no. i had a cooper m22 in 22-250 and loved it,it shot great. i quit shooten the 250 in favor of the 6br 14 twist with the heaver bullets/better accurarcy. i think the phoenix is a spectacular rifle. i like them and would buy one if i did not allready have a br and i have one in the works so just cant afford any more stuff right now.

Thanks Marks, What sort of velocity are you getting out of the 70gr, are you shooting a Cooper? Great job on the Groundhog

Thanks FJIM, I would rather have an 8 Twist, but can't seem to find a cooper Phoenix 6 BR with the 8 twist at this time

I might get tossed of this site(dont care). caseinelk, the 6BR was designed to be a 100-200yd accuracy cartridge. a 14 twist barrel is how it was intended to be. the 6BR got a bad rap in the benchrest game do to froming cases(nightmare) but they did shoot and were competiitive. so by the time rem started makeing cases(so so cases) the 6ppc was just so simple, great lapua case, turn the neck & fireform, cases last good, so the 6ppc tookover benchrest, but now the 6BR has a good lapua case and is accurate as the 6ppc and i feel is capable of shoot right with it. the 6BR in a 14 twist barrel is capable of extreeme accuracy 100-300yds and as a varmit round my be second to none. and just maybe a 12 twist would work as well. But what they dont tell you is a 1-8 twist is a highly specialized rifle best suited for long range TARGET SHOOTING and i understand why it is. but i dont belive its suited as a good varmit round.unless you are shooting 600-1000yds. i know i will have to try a 1-8 twist myself,i friend of mine had one some years back and it never shot well at 100yds,we never got any velocity out of it.He now has a dwight scott built 6BR 14 twist and is very happy with it. My big bitch is on this sites 6BR info page they dont mention the 14 twist it seems to be geared tward 600yd benchrest and beyond. and everyone says go with the 8 twist and i dont belive that to be true. i think they need to try a 14 twist .

Cooper offers a 1:10 twist option, which I believe is a no charge option. I'm assuming you will need to order the gun from Cooper directly so that option is available to you. I think you can also custom order different twists, but that might not be true any more. I've only seen a couple new Cooper 6BRs ever come up for sale, so they are hard to find. The ones I've seen from a retailer are always the 1:14 twist version.

My understanding is Wilson supplied the barrels when Dan Cooper owned the company, so from that standpoint they are as good as ever. I can't say for certainty this is fact though. Trying to get a Cooper story right is like trying to figure out if those targets they include are shot at 50 yards, 60 yards or 100 yards.

Cooper knows practically everyone measures performance by short range grouping...
So they pick twists that force you toward lighter flat based bullets, that will of course group well up close. And no, their proof group is not even 50yds, probably not with the gun it's hangin on, and they know most will assume otherwise.

Even with that, I like Coopers. For the money, they are not a bad deal in HUNTING gun. But all the deception pandered to has seriously limited their potential to that end.

For hunting, I'd pick up what you can easiest get, and replace the barrel with cut-rifled in 9tw or tighter for 6br NORMA.
This will maximize the potential for the gun.
For grouping, get a purpose built gun. Cooper stocks are horrible off bags(better with bipods).

ChasinElk, I have a Savage LRPV in 8tw that will shoot 70 BK very well. I have a Stiller Diamondback with 12, 10 , and 8 tw all 6BR. And I have a Bat with a 14tw 6BRX. My 14 tw run around 3500 f/s with N135.
Like FJIM, said The 8 tw will shoot the light bullets, but you loose speed. I like to shoot the twist for the bullet I want to shoot.

I like a 12 tw so I can shoot 80 gr Fowler and Berger also. Every 14 tw I have had did shoot the 80gr, but some don't.
