Cooper Model 36 IR 50/50 Rifle Questions-UPDATE

Long Story Short I know a guy locally who's father passed away and he has some extremely nice and expensive rifles. They are not "for sale" but he's willing to part with them. I went over to look things over and he handed me a Cooper chambered in 22 LR. I figured it was a 57M and as I was looking at it I realized it had a Jewel Trigger so I knew something was different and sure enough it is a Cooper Model 36 IR 50/50. Gun is in 98+ condition. My Question is, what is the going rate for one of these rifles. Can't find a thing online anywhere. Has someone seen one sell recently? If so I would love to know for how much. I want to be fair with the gentleman but I'm not looking to over pay. At the end of the day its still only a 22 LR. Thanks

Here's the text in the ad below the header:

Cooper M36 IR 50/50 22LR lightweight sporter style competition rifle with heavy 20" barrel,Mfg 1994-99 last MSR was $1950,excellent condition with the box, papers and test target

Yea I read that last night but that still doesn't tell me what it's worth today. I talked to a guy I know really well who deals a lot with that dealer that was selling that M36 IR 50/50 and he said based on the shipping price on the ad that it was listed years ago. That dealer now charges between $30-$45 to ship a long gun. The MSR being $1950 back in the 90's does surprise me but at the end of the day I'd really like to know what the real world value of one is today.

I would value this at somewhat less than a dedicated custom IR-50/50 sporter. Prices on those can be found without too much trouble.

John, maybe some of the early IR sporters built on factory actions. The 36 wouldn't be worth half of what the custom sporters of today. I don't want him thinking he's got a $2000+ gun.

I've never owned one so take this for what its worth. They had some shortcomings according to those that have. A search on the site I posted above will reveal these.
I did own a 57 TRP & it was a nice shooting rifle but, it too had some deficiencies imo.
I don't mean to knock Cooper's as most are very accurate rifles for what they are, that I've seen.
Personally, I would pass.

i am a fan of the cooper 36
i particularly like the verson with the jewell trigger in the ir 50/50 model, it is less desireable than some of the fancier models, but none the less a great gun
most were built to for competition shooting as a factory made sporter class gun, i would pay $2000 for the ir 50/50 version with upgraded wood and jewell trigger.
that being said if something should fail on the trigger you are screwed, jewell will not service it due to a falling out with Arnold Jewell and Dan Cooper over politics.....lol
i bought a NIB with the jewell and regular wood for 1450 +buyers premium this fall. its up to you.. one thing to watch out for is if the bolt was hard to close
a few had this issue and it will haunt you.......
hope this is helpful

That's a tremendous help.....The nice thing is, these guns aren't for sale. Not advertised anywhere or anything. So I get to go play with them whenever I like. I"m not rushed into making a decision on buying it. I was suppose to shoot it on Saturday but bad weather rolled in and we cancelled. Will reschedule soon though because I really wanna see how she shoots. Thanks for the info.

The identical gun on Guns America sold for $1995. With the Jewell trigger $1450.00 is a very fair price!

I used to own one of the first Benchrest models Cooper ever made. It was actually #18 if I remember correctly. I don’t remember exactly what they called them but it was something like the TRP1 or something similar.

At any rate, it was amazingly accurate, problem was it wouldn’t feed, extract or fire correctly to save its life. It was fantastic when it behaved, but I got tired of wrestling with it. After the second or third time I had sent it back to them and they pronounced it good, I got rid of it. Beautiful and accurate guns but 36’s had issues. . .
