Cooper in 204 Ruger

Phasor,

Excellent choice. I have the 8-32 version of that scope on my Tac-20. Another scope I really like is the Nikon Monarch 6-20. I have that on my Cooper 17 Mach IV. I feel they are as good as Leupold, but not quite as good as Zeiss.

Phasor & Editor, I weighed the two 21's and to my amazement.... they weighed within 6 oz. of each other. The Phoenix just felt lighter, I guess. And I also second the Nikon Monarch in 6x20. I have two,on the two Coopers that I weighed. Thanks for all the good info. 45/70sharpshooter

Well now the hard part is waiting on the Cooper to be built and delivered...:, But, it gives me time to round up all the equipment to get it ready for shooting...Also, you Cooper owners, does it come with rings and bases? I forgot to ask my dealer. And if not, any suggestions? The scope will not be moved from rifle to rifle. And where to acquire them?

Thanks, Phasor

Phasor,

The Cooper come with scope bases, but no rings. I highly recommend the Burris Signature Zee rings with the inserts. No need to lap them, they center automatically) and won't leave rings marks on the scope either.

4570sharpshooter,

Thanks for the info. I'm not surprised as the Cooper stock is pretty low profile. They make one of the lightest varmint class rifles around. Its something like 2 pounds lighter than the Remington Varmint class rifles. That's a good thing and a bad thing depending on how you look at it.

Fellow shooters,The saga continues.... Received my new scope to install on the new Phoenix. Herein lies the problem, the scope is a 56mm,the rings are Burris signature xtra high, the bases Leupold standard. THE SCOPE AO BEZEL RUBS THE BARREL:mad: I had to order Warne bases, & Warne rings to hope to correct the misapplication. Impatiently awaiting the replacement parts. The kicker,I was told that the parts originally ordered would fit. There are few base manufacturers that make bases to fit the Coopers:crazy: Load development put on hold. 45/70sharpshooter

Wow...that sucks...I wonder if my rings will fit now. I picked up a set of Burris rings with the polymer inserts yesterday. My scope is the Bushnell 4200 Elite 6-24X40...The dealer told me that they would work with the bases that come with the Cooper.

I guess that I will be like you and find out when the rifle gets here and I go to mount the scope....

Well 4570sharpshooter I hope that you get it all sorted out...keep us advised.

Thanks, Phasor

4570sharpshooter,

Gee, I'm sorry if I misled you. I have the Nikon on the Cooper, with Leupold rings. The Burris Zee rings had not come out yet when I got that rifle. But I have the Zee rights on my Remington with a Bushnell 4200 Elite with plenty of clearance.

Regards,
Kory

Kory, The problem was not your fault. The supply house that I use :rolleyes:had looked up a reference chart and told me which components to order. Now,I am waiting for the new ones from a different supplier. When I am successful,I will let you and the forum know. 45/70sharpshooter

Shazam, I now have everything fixed .:) I installed Warne Maxima series ex-high steel rings, and Warne Maxima series bases. This is the setup on a Cooper using a NF56mm scope. Now, I will get back with the forum on load develpoment. 45/70sharpshooter

4570sharpshooter, I'm glad that you got the scope problem solved. Please keep us advised on load development and your opinions on the Cooper.

Thanks, Phasor

Kory,

That rifle of yours in your 20 cal article sure looks good. Can you give us some info on it? Such as action, barrel, gunsmith, etc.

Thanks, Phasor

Phasor,

It is a trued, blueprinted Remington 700 ADL Short Action with a Holland Firing Pin. Jewell HVR trigger set to 1 lbs. Lilja Heavy Varmint barrel with a 12 twist. McMillan Hunter Benchrest,HBR) stock. Davidson single shot follower. BAT aluminum trigger guard. The scope bases are Leupold, the rings are Burris Signature Zee Rings. The scope is the Bushnell 4200 Elite 8-32x40. The whole thing weighs about 12 lbs. I've installed telfon tape on the fore arm and buttstock and mostly shoot it free recoil.

The gunsmith was Randy Melvin of Bull Mountain Rifle Company. One of the nicest and most knowledgeable guys you'll ever meet.

I can shoot 3 bullets into the same hole regularly. Very accurate.

Kory

Thanks Kory,

That is truly a fine rifle. I will probably do that to my Rem 700 BDL .17 Rem when the barrel goes...

Well....I got a call yesterday from my dealer....and the Cooper arrived. Just picked it up and will try and get the scope mounted in the next few days. Now I will have to wait for the wind to settle down here. Been blowing gusts to 50 mph for about the last 5 or 6 days. Nod conducive to load testing! Anyway, it's a beauty. I will update when I get a chance to do some load testing.

Just paid for a .204 Phoenix over the phone today and can't wait to get my hands on it...

Will post some pics soon

I have followed this thread with great interest. I myself ordered a Cooper in September. Well, it arrived 2 weeks ago and I finally went to shoot it this week-end. I mounted a Bushnell 4200 Elite atop it in a 6x24 with two piece Leupold bases and rings. I was shooting Hornady factory ammo in the 40 grn V-max and the 32 grn variety. The group is the 32grn'rs. I had the one hole until the 5th shot, which after seeing the first 4 I did'nt want to shoot the 5th). What can I say!? this is why we wait for and pay for the Coopers. Oh, and by the by, mine is a Phoenix. I forgot to say- the group was fired at 100yds

JDMagnum,

Boy oh Boy, hope my Phoenix shoots like that...Still a tad bit cold & windy here in central MO..

Good Shootin

Great shooting Jdmagnum!!!! I have the save setup as you except I have Burris signature rings. So far the Wyoming wind has not let me out to shoot my Phoenix, but I have plenty of rounds loaded for load development. Will try and get out next week and do some shooting. I will post my findings in this thread. Have you done any load testing with hand loads yet? Might not need to with the accuracy that you are getting with those factory loads....;)
