Cooper Firearms 6mmBR

I was looking to buy another 6mmBR rifle and really wanted it to be a Cooper. My current 6BR is a 1/8 twist and I have been very happy with it. Cooper offers their 6BR in 1/14 twist. It seems that this would limit me to light weight bullets in the mid to low 60s. My question is what would be realistic in terms of useful bullet weights and range with a twist of 1/14?

John,

Some guys have shot the 75gr V-max with success from a 1:14. But that is about the most I'd think you could stabilize and that's marginal. The Fowler 80s, for example, are designed for 1:12 or faster barrels.

Berger even recommends a 13-twist as optimal for their 66s and 68s.

There has been some talk at Cooper of building a 10-twist 6BR. You might ask before placing your order. Perhaps you might convince them to do a prototype.

I have a Cooper MTV in 6mmBR 26" 14 twist. I have had great success with 65 gr Vmax and 68 gr. Berger HP. My rifle will not shoot 75 gr Vmax at all but will shoot 75 gr. Sierra Varminter extremely well. I'm talking 1/4" 5 shot 100 yd. groups. From my experience the 75 gr. Sierra would be the max for the 14 twist.
Cooper will special order any twist rate you desire at a cost. Cooper offers a 10 twist on their 243 and 6mm Rem so they might substitute on the 6mmBR. It won't hurt to ask.

Thanks for the info. The rifle that I have been looking at is in a local gun store so I would not have to wait for Cooper to build it. I would have bought the rifle if it was a 1/8 to 1/12 twist but will give some serious consideration to buying the 1/14.

I have the Pheonix in 1-14, it likes the Buger 68g, 5 shot usually in the high 1. and low .2s. I tried 65 Vmax & 70g b-tip it's too bad that I can't get them to shoot as well as the burger.

There a few guys who use 6mm BR's in IBS Score Shooting The ones I know of are 1-14 or 1-13.5 twist. They begin to shine after 100 yards. One of them won the Maine State Championship a couple of years ago. I, myself have been shooting one in the Hunter class for two years and have won some matches with it, even one at 100 YDS. I have a new 1-13 twist barrel going on it this winter. Ya don't give up anything inside 100 yds with lite bullets.

Nobody should put out 24cal barrels in 14:1 -as standard. Same with 22cal in 14:1.
I think Cooper is trying to force use of short/FB bullets for better 100yd grouping.
Basically, cheating, as with their group card hanging off the gun..

Today, I would press Cooper for the correct twist for cal & capacity potential bullets, or dismiss them.

Copper, If you call Cooper to order your rifle, they will let you choose 10 twist or 14 twist in 6br, I have 1 of each & they both shoot great!
I have been using 70 grain nosler BT's in the 14 twist for vermin, Berger BR columns for targets, 90 grain Berger boat tails & 80 grain Barts boat tails in the 10 twist,

OH, and the last time I sent a rifle to them for rebarrel, I had them put a Kreiger on instead,
