Cooper 52 Excalibur

I am looking at a Cooper 52 Excalibur 25-06 in excellent condition. Never owned a Cooper rifle. Do they have any known problems? Would You use Talley bases or picatiny rail ? ( it comes with both). What is fair price to offer for a rifle like that ?

Talley bases or pic rail just depends on your needs/wants, but mostly the scope(s) you want to put on it as the bases require a scope with a pretty wide spread on that LA, pic rail can be anything and if you like to use different scopes on the same rifle then with the pic rail you're not limited at all.

I'd check GB and the other online auction places to get a good idea on current prices, try to find something comparable and see what they go for or are asking for on the buy now ones. I'm talking used and older, not new ones.

Prices are all over the map. I've seen them as low as $1600 for low miles nice wood but generally much more, like $3-5k. The wood will dictate a lot of the price as well as any other options. Really nice AAA will run it up some. There's more than a few folks in the varminting and hunting forum that have them, if they don't answer the 2009 question here then maybe ask over there.

Mine is a 2014 but I knew lots of folks in the varminters community who bought em in the years prior and the reason I ordered mine in 2013 and waited nearly a year, new Jackson Game AAA Claro Walnut with a few extras it was $2949 new. If I could have got more back then I would have but I was pretty hand to mouth back then. Nowadays I can afford what I want so I have little interest and would rather build a custom but make no mistake Cooper's still have a spot in my heart. Most shoot and more than a few have super nice wood.

Understand that as far as I can tell nobody makes composite stocks for those, or wood for that matter. So if you have an issue requiring a replacement you'll likely need to have one custom made.

Duh, you said Excalibur, so a composite. Sorry I'm being more than a little dosy. Yeah those shoot, get it for what you can, or if you know them then make a fair offer and grab it.

Thank You for the info. The one I am looking at is definitely low mileage. Composite stock. 1000008352.jpg

GB has this for $1800 buy now right now, so that's a mark. anyhow if you look out there at all their Cooper M52's you'll see prices are soup to nuts, but yeah 1800 is in general definitely low. Also the shot card was at 35yrds, at least that's what they told me all their tests were done at.

Yes, prices are all over the map. But.... they are getting ready to go up because from what I'm told, the new owners are designing a new action and projected price points will take a good jump.
I would expect the rifle that you are looking at to be in the 2K ballpark, any lower and it's a real good deal.
I've got a rail on my model 52 and wouldn't change it.

My M52 (classic w/ wood stock) is very accurate, and has given me no trouble. Using 2 piece bases will severely limit your scope selection, but I was able to use Talley Steel rings with a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40.

The other consideration is the 3 shot detachable magazine. It works well, but it’s tough finding a spare if you need one. For most of my deer hunting, 3 shots is more than enough. But it’s slow to reload if you need more than 3. The new Arkansas company was supposed to get some magazines in stock, but I don’t know if that’s happened yet.

Mine is in 6.5x284 and shoots incredibly. I have had 3 shot groups at 200 under.5”. My son killed a coyote at 785 first shot with it today. Buy it

@ben-o contact Glenn, they should have them in-stock m52 $125 plus shipping, tell him caliber of your rifle and what finish floor plate (blued or stainless).

You may or may not need to do a little fitting of the latch catch, I got one recently and it needed filed down just a smidge to get it to latch.

For existing Cooper customers seeking questions, service, parts, or warranty work, please contact Glenn May at glenn@nighthawkcustom.com

Doubt this is legit but if it is you better buy it before I do. Guess I need to log in to Gunbroker.
Just looked, it must have sold. Cheapest on GB is $1900 in .300 Weatherby Mag.

Ouch. I thought that I paid a lot for my extra magazine 10 years ago when I ordered my model 52 -$75
yeah and they are just cheapo stamped like the originals. Hawkins or one of the others really could clean up simply by making those mags. I know I'd buy one of theirs over the stamped ones any day.

Yep. Finally picked it up. Very interesting rifle. Never had a Cooper. Rifle came with Farrell 20 MOA rail , and some Talley mounts , factory card and thats it. I could not duplicate the 3 shot test target it came with. But came close. Lol. My target was 3 shots at 100 yards scope set at 12 power. With Hornady 90 grain CX lead free ammo.

Interesting. Myself, I would not consider this new action, made by *those guys* to be a Cooper.
