Cooling Fans

Happy Father’s Day!

I have read many posts about cooling fans to cool the barrel and found nothing in the latest F-Class NRA rules in this regard. This is not my concern, though.

My question is about using a 7” diameter battery-powered fan to cool myself when shooting. I will be shooting an all-day match (or hope to do so) next Saturday when the temperatures are expected to be in the high 90s accompanied by the typical St. Louis area high humidity.

The fan my son gave me for Father’s Day has three speeds, and the lower speed is relatively quiet.

Will I be breaking any rules by using the fan?

Thanks!

Alex

If anyone is bothered by that fan the report of the other guns on the firing line should drive them nuts.

As a sling shooter, I have used a battery powered fan for several years. Got it at Walmart and it u ses two D cell batteries. Two speeds and works to keep a little air moving on ur face. Have seen cool vest where ice packs are placed over ur kidneys n helps with Cooling. I also have an ice pack that I fabricate to lay on the back of my neck. Keep the command center cool. just a few thoughts.

I have a Ryobi fan which uses the same battery as my leaf blower, drill and other tools. With the larger battery, it run the fan for hours, works good and is pretty quiet.
Several shooter I know use them.

My concern is someone intentionally or accidentally directing the air flow towards my gun. With it being near the muzzle I feel it could alter the direction of the bullet from the start and it would not show up on the wind flags.

I don't think so but check with the RO for clarification.
Stay Cool and Good Luck

As a Desert Rat in Phoenix , there is SOOoooo much I could say about this topic , but I'll just pass on this one . Ambient temp on the 600 Line at 9:00 a.m. last Thursday was 116 F when we finished , and not a fan in sight , except in a couple of chambers . And you guys all laugh at us Locals at the SWN when you see us wearing Thermals and jackets .....Seriously ? February is in Our winter , too . And it's the same fifty , sixty or seventy degree drop in our local temps , too . It's all relative.

Add 90% humidity to that temperature and let seeing what happens to your firing line.

Originally from the east-side of Cleveland , and two Tours in the Nam . Also worked a Crew Service Boat in the Gulf , so I'm familiar with humidity . Played two rounds of Golf at Palm Valley on the hottest day of record in history . Love the heat . That's why I live here . Humidity creates a lot of people with arthritis . No thank you .

Since I have several Kobalt 24V tools I ordered one of their fans. They offer one with a misting feature but reviews indicate a high failure rate of the pump that pulls water for the mist. I opted for the standard fan that doesn't have that feature. Tracking shows it arriving tomorrow. I also ordered a pair of neck wearable cooling fans after checking reviews on several. I think they will be great at work but not sure of use at the bench.

You might want to look at a fan that can use what ever brand of recharble batteries your power tools use. So if you use Dewalt think about a Dewalt fan or if you use Rayobi than look at those. This way you can keep a few battery packs in your truck with your gear and impact gun etc....When you get to the range you can just slip your battery into your fan etc....Not like your humping this gear up a mountain.
