Cooling down the bore.

Grimstod

Machinist, Designer, and Shooter.
Anyone ever messed around with small fans for coolind down your bore?
I was thinking of taking a funnel and gluing in a fan from an old computer to stick into my action and cool the chamber and barrel down faster between shooting.

What also works is compressed air in a small tank with an hose and nozzle. Use it all the time when practicing after about 20 rounds.

wouldnt that affect the bore and you would have to dry the barrel before you shoot again?

Try this:

This is my solution. Just get a return line and a way to catch it off the muzzle- a funnel works well. About 1min and your barrel is ambient temp or below. Even faster if you use it in an icechest

I use a white towel soaked in cold water, fold it and lay it over the barrel to aid in cooling it off. I shoot pdogs, when I change rifles, I leave a cold towel on the hot one for a few minutes and the barrel cools right down. Been using this method for years.

I have a product coming out to market in a few months (targeting end of March). It is already patent pending and production should be starting in a few months.

It will fit in an AR-15 and AR-10/LR308 platform and in the majority of our bolt action rifles. It can be used during cease fires because it doubles as an empty chamber indicator and battery life is approximately 10-14 hours with batteries you can pick up from everyday stores. It draws in ambient air and is exhausted into the chamber/bore, thus cooling the barrel from the inside. The idea behind this is you can cool the barrel while still indicating a safe gun on the line.

Here is the prototype picture, which is shown in a 700 action. I will release more pictures of the final design in the coming days.

I have a friend that uses a SCBA tank, a short piece of hose, and a chamber adapter. He got the tank when a local fire department updated their tanks to something lighter. He just slips the adapter into the chamber, turns the valve on lightly, and lets the air trickle through the bore. Works great.

We used water down the barrel for 20+ years in the finest custom rifles. It takes 6 Oz of water to cool a hot barrel, just run the tube in the back or your bore guide. Then 4 dry patches on a tight punch type jag, dry the chamber, back to shooting in 3 minutes.

Also, we found a huge benefit in patching out the barrel extended our shooting strings.

Folks are scared of running water down their barrels, new and different idea. We would set back a 31" unturned blank 3 times, and never saw any kind of pitting in the corners of the lands or anywhere else.

This is an idiot proof idea that is so simple and cheap.

Stand the gun up with the chamber open, the chimney effect will take it from there. It doesn't take as long as you would think.
