Convince me that I DON'T Need a 22-250 Ackley Improved or 22 Creedmoor

I've been spending a bit of time recently harassing an occasional wayward coyote. Usually I take a 223 Ackley Improved fast twist, and a 6x47 Lapua w/105 Amaxes for way out there shots. Shot distances have ranged from 400 to 1K plus (not successful at the latter).

I have a hankering to speed the velocity a bit on 75 grain or 80 grain Amaxes, so have been contemplating a 22-250 Ackley or 22 Creedmoor.

Has anyone gotten the 22-250 Ackley Improved to reliably feed from an AICS magaizine?

I did not have issues with feeding in the R700 BDL with the Ackley cartridge, but think that the gunsmith may have modified the action slightly.

Probably rebarrel the 700, or get a pre-fit for an Impact.

What would YOU do.

No experience with the AICS mag question, but my longest 1st rounder on a chuck, EVER, was with the 22-250AI w/75gr A-max.
I like the 223, 223AI very well, but if I know I’m going long I reach for the 22-250AI.
Hope it works out for you.

Well to convince you, you don't need either. Think about all the money you can save, by the time you buy a rifle or even re-barrel, new dies and all the work to fire form brass. Don't even think about changing from your 223.

O heck with it, forget all that and get either one an have a blast ( pun intended)..

Dibss -

Used a lot of .22-250 w/ 55gr varmint bullets from 24" 1-14 on groundhogs.
Also saw .225Win and .220 Swift used on those varmints.

My .22-250 experience left me wanting a bit more oomph, which is somewhat of an intangible to explain.
Didn't like the .220 Swift's rim, long case lg and case taper.

I wildcatted .35 Remington down to .224" cal. I kept the same case oal and shoulder diam as the parent brass, but put a 26* shoulder on my case. That gave me a shoulder area the covered a good amount of powder, and from what I have read the .22-35 was the capacity equivalent of a .22 Creedmoor.

I think the case capacity youl have in mind in " right sized ". After trying .22-35 in a 24" 1-14 w/ Hornady 55SX , and wanted a set-up capable of use out to 1,000yd... whether varmint or target.
I then used .22-35 in a 28" 1-8, shooting Hornady 75 "A"-Max exclusively. I felt I had all bases covered, for my shooting needs. And the rifle just described sounds similar to what you are considering.

Both the .22 Creed and .22-35 Remington have 1.920" case oal. Unfortunately, I cannot speak to feeding through an AICS magazine; as my rifle had a Wichita WBR1375 single shot action.

I don't believe I am trying to talk you out of anything. Go get 'em !

You came to the wrong place. You need both and report back to us.

I started out with a laminate Rem. 700 SA in .22-250, dead stock from Remington, then I found a really neat rabbit hole to head down. A Krieger HV, chambered >22-250AI 8 twist, Rifle basic trigger, Sightron 8-32, Bipods, rests, bags, mats, cases...... and on and on. But dam do I smile when I watch in the scope of a chuck exploding at there at 500 yards when that 75 A-max finds it's target. So yes, I like my .22-250AI, I've always liked hot rods.

Maybe a 22 BR improved of some sort and a barrel twist to accommodate 80g bullets. I have a 22Brx 8 twist shooting 75 g ELDS it has done very well out to 800yds. + barrel life is better than my fast twist 22/250 AI's I've had.

Details....Please...

If you want to go fast.. go FAST.

How about a .22-284, or similar.

28”+ tube, Bartlein’s new heavy duty steel in a 10.5-9” twist progressive…

….at-or-nearly (gnarly) 4,000 fps with an 80-class .224.

I bet you could hit some really big numbers with the 88-95 grainers as well.

Might get 750-1,000 rounds of life if you shoot slow and use that new steel.

Go 22-250 AI. 22 Creed only RCBS is listing dies for it $128.99. 22-250AI Redding - Full length bushing die $62.99 Both out of stock at Graf's. I have decided to go with the 22-250 AI.
Proof Carbon Fiber barrel. 1-8 twist to shoot Sierra 77gr TMK. Shouldn't have any problem feeding from AICS mags after you get them blown out. Cases are almost the same between the two. 22-250 40* shoulder, 22 Creed 30* shoulder
