Converting Remington 541T to .17 WSM

I have a 541T-HB which has yet to impress in the accuracy department. Have seriously considered a centerfire conversion to Hornet, but it's more money than I want to put into the rifle. So now Winchester comes out with a new hotrod rimfire in my favorite caliber..hmm.

I assume that the action can handle the added pressure since 541's have been converted to many centerfire chamberings. In theory just a new .17 barrel would do the trick after opening the bolt face a little and maybe a little filing on the extractors. Single-shot loading would be fine with me if necessary.

My question is whether or not the firing pin spring has enough "soup" to touch off the thicker brass.

Any ideas?

Tom

the .17 msm is going to require more to convert, since it is based on a .27 industrial round. we are in the process of converting a pair of 580 remingtons to center fire, using take off 22 centerfire barrels. they will be 22/30 carbine when finished. will be very close to 218 bee in powder capacity.

I have converted 2 580 remingtons to 17wsm. They were no issue in the ignition department. The issue was I made new extractors to fit the thicker rim. They shot well once you find a good lot of ammo.

Not trying to derail here...but how about a 580 to 17 M2? Anyone want to do that if a 17 cal barrel blank provided?

Just asking for a friend...

I had Brian Voelker build me one from a 581. Mounted it in a 541T stock. Boring to shoot it’s so accurate.
