Cheap entry to 17 cal?

17 fireball. I bought my prefit from Shilen. No turn neck. Mounted it to a Stevens action. Really easy way to go. Did the swap myself with barrel nut wrench.

I built a 20P on a R783 action, and use the OEM mag to feed due to the smaller ejection port on the R783 action. Feeds fine, I usually catch the brass with my left hand so I don't have to chase it or look for it.
Yeah my 20p feeds just fine. It was the 17fb i was worried about feeding

I have two original 17 Fireball actions, a Model 7 and a 700. The 7 feeds like crap and the 700 I went the follower route and made it a single shot. One thing to remember, the Remington 17 Fireball bolt is different than their standard .223 bolt. Having said that, still love the cartridge and have taken a LOT of game with it.

I'm running a 17FB and a 222 on Marlin XS7 actions. The 17 lets go of the brass too soon but I'm shooting prairie dogs not robbing banks. Single feed and shoot works just fine on both of them. Just bought a Howa barreled mini in 223. Should arrive this week. Not sure what it will become but anxious to get it and start looking at my options.

I would not recommend a hornet. i have one and I like it, but there was no brass for 4 years and no ammo for 3 years. The Hornady brass is lousy. I have had rim lock once. If I was to do it all again i would go with a 20 vartarg or 20-222.

I was looking at the 17/223 . Like to fnd out more about it
I would look at 17-222 before the 223. There is something to the long neck with the larger case capacity I and others have seen the out come.
The 221 parent case is a completely different powder burn rate, most of the time, gets by with a some what shorter neck.
There is another 17-223 floating around the neck and shoulder do not interest me at all.
