Converting a 6mm Remington to .284 Winchester

Gun in question is a Remington 788. Nothing at all wrong with the 6mm Rem but I want the gun to be a 284. On paper the two cartridges are of similar length and I think the 284 might feed OK with minor adjustments to the clip feed lips. I've already verified that 284 cartridges (factory loaded) fit although only two fit. I'm aware that short action 284's have limitations but it's not an issue for my needs.

Wondering if anyone here has tried something similar.

If your question is, could you put a 284 barrel on the 6mm action and have it feed from the factory magazine( blind mag/ DBM fed), I think the answer is yes. The case is larger but close in length. Do not see why it would not. Your just putting another barrel on a short action. Feed lips would need to be opened up a bit on box mags.

It would seem to me that, since the 6MM Rem is based on the 7X57 mauser case, the action would allow you to seat the 284 Win out longer than the max 2.800" max in most short actions, or am I mistaken? Was the 6mm Rem produced in the standard short action?

The 6mm IS a short action cartridge. Regardless of which manufacturer builds the gun to chamber this cartridge, it is a short action round. It can be built on a long or short however. The unfortunate thing about the 284 win case is that it's longer than most short action cases making it less appealing to build on a short action if using 175 or heavier bullets in VLD design. If your going to use bullets between 160-168 and purchase bottom metal and mags that will accommodate a COAL of 2.975, you will be able to utilize the cartridge to very close to its potential. I can push the 162s over 3000 fps in my short action 284 in a 25" barrel easily without pressure issues or compressing powder. Obviously an increased barrel length will help but being a hunting setup, I wanted a compromise.
