Convert RB/LP to Drop Port

How hard would it be for a gunsmith to machine a drop port on the bottom of an action or can you even get there from here?

I have a Stolle Panda RB/LP in 22BR that I hunt Prairie Dogs and Coyotes with. Dumping all my brass in a small pile sounds good.

Thanks in advance to all that reply.

According to Jerry Stiller, you would need a whole new bolt. I would guess because of where the ejector and extractor are located on the drop port bolt.

I think the Drop port uses a remington style circlip extractor that is oriented toward the bottom of the case head. I don't own one so I can't say for sure. Jerry or Curtis at Stiller actions are real easy guys to talk to on the phone and would certainly give you the facts. Let us know what they say if you call them.

I have two Stiller Drop Ports and have another on order.

On a right bolt action, the Remington extractor is on the left when the bolt is closed and on the bottom when the bolt is opened and withdrawn. Being on the bottom is important to allow the case to drop off of the bolt face when it gets over the case shaped hole in the bottom of the action.

A guy could mill the opening in the body of the reciever and then install a Sako style,I think that's the right extractor) extractor on the bolt at the proper position and it would surely work. BUT, this could be a dangerous thing to do. When the bolt on such an action is closed the Sako style extractor would be on the left side. If ever a case ruptured the Sako extractor would blow off of the bolt and come back along the left bolt raceway, then it would exit the port into the face and possibly the eyes of the shooter. This could be deadly. And that's the reason Stiller uses the Remington extractor. It's contained in the nose of the bolt and can't get out to attack the shooter during a case failure.

Stiller has applied for a patent on the drop port. One of the reasons he did this was to prevent other action makers from using un-safe extractors on their own drop port actions. If some shooters were injured by drop ports it would give a black eye to the neatest action design to come down the pike in years.

If you want to see poetry in motion.... Watch Mike Bryant run a 10 shot group with his Drop Port Diamondback rail gun. I haven't timed him but it sounds like a semi auto rifle being fired by someone with a chronic trigger finger twitch.
