convert a 700 to a RUM whats needed

I picked up a cheap wal mart 700(IN 270WIN) for a project gun. Im almost settled on a 338 RUM i know i need a new bolt PTG has me covered. What else will need changed out? Id like to run the vld stuff from a mag but the internal factory style mag is fine with me if it will work. So what all will i need for an economy type build of this nature? Thanks much

Open up the boltface to .532 .recomend having the action trued ,pick up a
good 338cal 1-10 twist barrel chamber install and your done.

Its a guess, but I think the factory mag is too short to function practically with VLD bullets in a RUM. If so, an extended Wyatt's box mag might be an option.

I believe the bottom of action will need to be opened up also to accommodate the diameter of the rum case and a wyatts extended box as stated above. You may be better off picking up a ultra mag action in the long run. Good luck

Great suggestions, like said above by the time they open feed lips, replace bolt and get bottom metal you will be WAY ahead to get a ULTRA action to start. Also IMHO make an edge not a 338RUM the brass is easier to get and has a little more power.

He can just have the bolt opened up and a sako extractor put in, which I prefer for the magnums. I would have just bought a cheaper custom. More bang for the buck and higher resale value. Matt

Go buy a 700 long range on 300rum at Cabela's when they go on sale for $600. Then get a 338 9.4 twist bbl to install. Probably they easiest route.

I am with Matt, Look around for a cheaper custom action 700-900 to hit classifieds and build one. Heck a lot of times you could grab a compete rifle with higher round count for cheap.

My advice:
Keep your bolt
If you want a RUM build, start with a RUM action. You are going to spend buku bucks making this thing work. Bolt stop, feed rails, etc.
Rechamber in 6.5-06 AI and shoot with a 338 Edge.

You are correct. The action magazine cut needs to be opened up.

RUM bare actions can be found for a reasonable price. The bolt face is the same as a standard Magnum action, but I heard reports that feed rails are slightly different. I have a SS RUM action myself.

So are the RUM actions already set up like or for the extended Mag box? Or will it still need the mortise milled off to feed the vld type stuff? Seems like the Edge COAL was real close to 4'' witt he new bergers

  • receiver machined open to the rear (wyatt has pictures on his site)
  • bottom metal machined open to the rear (will explain)
  • extended ultra mag box (wyatt's work very well)
  • normal follower will work better than an extended in my experience
the issues i've had were that unless you open up the bottom metal, too, the extended follower won't seat down in the bottom, denying you the third round. and if you use a normal follower, the bottom round catches on the rear of the bottom metal, anyway. you can open it up or angle it down but if it's angled, a long COAL will pinch the bottom bullet against the front, anyway. it's a really inconvenient situation. you can get it to work fine if you're ok with two rounds down. if you want three down, i'd recommend the nosler case. same parent case but shorter so you have all the same components but a lot more room for bullet without going extended.

also, i found with the ultra mags, the machined followers pinched the round between the feed rails and the ridge on the follower. i had to polish a lot of the edge off to get reliable feeding, or use a stamped follower. i'm not a fan of extended rum, personally, just because the case is so long it turns into a hassle. someone better than i might have some easier solutions and not consider it a big deal, though.

how does one get more velocity from an Edge than a full length RUM case?

You will have a lot less $$$ and headaches just buying a RUM action to start with.
