Contessa Pict base for Sako dovetail

Has anyone used this base? it appears to be fairly clean in its method of securing the base to the dovetail. I am about done with Sako dovetail. I think they are afraid to admit it, but the Tikka method is probably a superior mounting design. I am even considering D and T an M995 receiver, if I end up getting one. I know it is blasphemy.

Why would it be blasphemy? Sako still hasn't figured out that pic rails are what people want, Optilock is not that good of a system at all! I had them on my M995 in 30-378 and they don't work on a heavy recoiler like that, I got an IOR Valdada pic mount for mine and it works. On the new S-20 they put a pic rail on it, But it's goofy and you are still stuck with their goofy 20 moa mount if you want to shoot long range with it until someone comes up with something better on the aftermarket side. Near mfg makes some good stuff, I have not tried theirs yet.

Don't get me wrong I love my Sako's I have several, But it's frustrating dealing with mounting options, They should have abandoned the Sako Dovetail system years ago.

Looking at the Contessa rail, They have a weird sliding plate apparatus on one end of it if you look at the top of the rail.

Although I don't see the sliding rail in the pic you posted, The ones I looked at in the past had it.

Why doesn't Sako make a pic rail adapter for their stuff? You have to search for it in the aftermaket and their isn't a lot to choose from.

Great post. The older super nice Sakos with medium calibers I can deal with. I do have an AV in 6.5x55 that I want to improve on my mounts and rings, but I haven't spent much time dealing with it. It is serviceable now. I forget what system I have on it now. I think one reason Sako/Beretta does not change is bc Beretta wants to keep it proprietary. There are two versions of Contessa rail. One is pretty complex with topside 'plate/fixture'. The other one has sideplate like you mentioned above. I have studied the photos pretty carefully. The second one described just now only has two side plates and no plugs or screws on top of rail. Like you said, w Sako, nothing is easy these days.

I would love to get another M995 in 6.5x55, It is one of my Favorite calibers, Although I do have a lot more faves for sure! I would die for an M995 in some of the Lazzeroni cartridges that came chambered from the factory.

I just saw a debate about this subject on another forum, And the guy was trying to decide between the Sako S-20 and a Bergara, His main complaint was the scope mounting options on the Sako, Keeping it proprietary is going to bite them as people don't want to be stuck with expensive proprietary mounts that aren't all that good and very expensive.

I would still choose the Sako S-20 Precision over the Bergara, Just because I really like Sako rifles, I won my first place 1000 yard team match back in 2007 with a Sako TRG 42, Myself and my best friend from High School both had matching TRG-42's in 338 Lapua And we won the Team match that day together, Something I will always remember!

what are your thoughts on m995 in 270? I'm getting scared about the 'loose' magazine and stock breaking?

I agree, S20 over Bergara, but I have not fired a Bergara, I have read they are semi copy of Rem 700 action, which is a darn good action.

None of my stocks have cracked, One of my M995's is in 30-378, One is in 7mm STW and neither one of them have suffered a cracked stock yet, Any way as others in the past have mentioned, Keep the action screws tight and you should be okay, The loose magazine as long as it doesn't cause a feeding problem I wouldn't be too concerned, I have had no trouble with mine, And they are superbly accurate, Although the 30-378 tends to knock things down on both ends! The Bergara's are very accurate rifles.

Thank you for the input. There is a ton of urban lore on the net. Individual instances/stories become general propositions. Twenty years ago, one could buy a Belgian Hi-Power for cheap. Now they are pretty pricey!

those are some stout calibers, especially the 30-378!

Yeah I knew Near had been making them for a long time, They had a problem with ejecting rounds and hitting their mounts, The fix was to mill out the center section, I see they come that way now, Probably the best mounts out there!

The 30-378 holds around 110-115 gr of powder or so depending on powder, bullet etc. , It's a beast, And like I said, It knocks things down on both ends! When I first got it, The Sako rings would not hold the scope, The IOR rail with Badger max 50's did the trick!
thats a lotta powder.
