Considering XTC

I shoot XTC just to try and get the Distinguished Rifleman badge. It also provides a very nice break from the bullseye pistol game. The 4.5x scope on a nm ar is strickly cheating but I love it lol. Loading is stupid easy maglength with a 69,70, or 77 grain bullet and 80/85 grain bullet for 600. The wind is what is usually the problem in offhand up hear in ND.

In ftr I occasionally drop points by being lazy and accepting a less than solid dead center hold to pull.

Shooting sling prone I'd be there forever waiting for that hold. So I can reinforce a bad habit if I'm not very attentive when switching back.

CMP Rimfire Sporter
- cheap 22 ammo
- shooting coat is not even legal much less borderline required
- SIX stages - prone, sit, stand all shot both slow and rapid
- huge targets nearly impossible to take zeroes on even with really bad offhand like mine
- most kinds of 22 rifles accommodated
- class for irons if you prefer
- scope class up to 6x rather than 4.5x

Quite a few reasons to maybe be attractive if available locally

It can be a lot of fun.its a sport to where you can make it whatever you want.if you just want to show up and have a good time while competing against yourself thats fine or if you want to go full blown chasing a national championship then thats fine too.

Where arw you located?in sure someone has some loaner gear to help you figure it out

Ammo and rifles for XTR are very well understood. The loads are all known, and published. The sport is much more about your shooting ability and much less about your wallet. You can build a very capable service rifle AR for the cost of an f class scope. I put one together on an existing lower and flattop upper for cheap (barrel, forend, bolt, scope) and it is a delight to shoot. Get some 20 round magazines. Barrels last 5k rounds or more. Ammo is much less demanding to load, and cheaper. Processed once fired GI brass is often used, and can be bought cheaply. Lots of shooters load XTR ammo on progressive loaders. I doubt any anneal their brass.

You dont have to use a coat, but scoring percentages have been normalized to people using them. 4.5 power scopes in service rifle are a recognition that the services now use weapons with optics, and have made it possible for old guys with bad eyes to shoot SR.

Shoot f class in the summer.

I have 2 AR's, one is an old SP-1 the mid 70's and a new Savage MSR15. My PRS trainer in .223 is in a MPA Chassis with a straight 12x on it. Will anyone of these work? My eyes aren't so good, I was born with a detached retina in my left eye, and my right is in need of a corrective lens. Before I started this thread I took my 10/22 and ran it at 50 yards to see how I would handle the positions. Brought back my childhood memories, very enjoyable. I have watched some videos and read a little in the past. My buddy is coming over today for Thanksgiving and we are going to practice .22 in standing, sitting, prone. Keep the information coming, it is much appreciated.

Take either one of the ARs and shoot those under match rifle.it's as easy as that. If you are feeling like a bolt gun the MPA chassis will work.also, get a match rifle sling from Creedmoor sports or champions choice and go from there.

I will try to find someone to bring what you need so you can give it a go. What’s your sport coat size?

I’m sure we can get you hooked up with rifle, sling, ammo, jacket and glove. Most everybody is using a scope these days. Just like every other scope discipline, you need a distance corrected script for your shooting eye.

.22lr is a good way to practice while also getting the feedback of an actual impact (vs. the no impact of dry-firing). The longer time the .22 projectile spends in the barrel forces you to have good follow-through. I've burned a lot of .22lr as practice for XTC.

There are a number of .22 setups folks have used as highpower trainers. Starting out, though, dry-fire time with one of the AR's or the PRS trainer (if you're wanting to jump into bolt guns out of the gate) will be important. Natural Point of Aim . . .

If you do feel froggy, make at least 10 dummy rounds to practice rapid fire with. Not having dummy rounds and doing dry-fire rapid fire practice will leave you with a different feel of bolt operation when you go to shoot live-fire. Also, for rapid practice, put yourself on a 60 second timer for sitting/70 second for prone.

You'll have to forgive my ignorance on the MPA stock, but on the Eliseo chassis and the Tubb 2000 rifles, you don't have to move your head off the stock to work the bolt, something you may have to do with the MPA. An important consideration for practice, again, if you want to shoot the bolt gun out of the gate. Unnecessary with the AR's.

XTC,

At 59 years old I'm considering taking up another form of shooting. What say you, to those that shoot this discipline?

Don Dunlap

Yes, definitely give XTC shooting a try! It is more about the Indian than the arrow in that sport.

I started my competitive shooting experience at a CMP XTC clinic. I paid a flat fee and the club hosting the clinic provided a rifle, ammo, sling, and maybe a shooting glove along with a 30 min introduction to the three positions. It was a very economical way to try out the sport.

If you don’t have any equipment yet, most clubs have a “club gun” which is an AR-15 and some ammo that they allow junior shooters or new shooters use.

Shooting coats: A properly fitting shooting coat is the most important piece of equipment that you will buy for accross the course shooting. Creedmoor sports makes some of the best coats for the sport. I have a couple of the $400 Creedmoor coats and one of the $100 Creedmoor coats. The $100 coat is a very good option if you are dipping your toe into the sport on a budget. Their “hardback coat” is the XTC gold standard. Here is a link to the entry level coat.

Rifle: an AR-15 based match rifle will be your easiest entry option. White Oak Armament is hands down the best “off the shelf” option for an AR-15 Service rifle or match rifle. 223 is a great round for the sport for many reasons.

Good luck with your start in the sport!

BTW, one of our forum members has many shooting coats of various sizes that he has loaned to new shooters from time to time. Send me a PM If you would like me to put you in touch.
