Considering Contributions & their importance

The Daily Bulletin today says 150 site users donated in the last quarter. A few questions I have. Is this 'past quarter' unusually low, high or average? How many site users donate yearly? If it's an average amount for the four quarters that means 600 donated in a year. This is out of over 20,000 users. This is really unacceptable and if you factor the information that is available it's crazy low. If you factor the quality of the information it is even worse. Magazines have become useless (or nearly so) and that it is luck if one article may contain something you actually want to know. For me the site in a valuable source of informed info that you can't beat....at any price..anywhere. Of course there are posts where the wheels come off, prejudices towards some makers, etc., but they are far outnumbered by folks that sit and type out in answers in such a variety and depth of knowledge it amazes me. To use this and not to contribute is unconscionable. A few bucks now and then....man what a deal.
For the classifieds......that story is far worse.

Also consider the alternatives you have should this site not exist

Re: Contributions

I try to donate 2 to 3 times a year and it pains me knowing that some longer time members have never donated. It is easy to see if you look at the member registry. All anyone can do is something like a nominal 20.00 per year. You spend more than that on ammo in mere moments.

The irony, to carry your point one step further, is that the regulars on this site will often provide a link or other reference to an article that has been published in a popular magazine so you can go out and buy it if you'd like ... or not ... depending on your interests.
C'mon folks. Let's make it a New Year's resolution to toss in a few extra bucks.

I agree, we ALL need to help support this GREAT site!!! I better check to make sure I have made a recent donation :) Yep, I am a contributor, but it is time to pony up again. Dig deep and help out PLEASE!!!

some people have over 20+ transactions and are not site contributors. Should possibly consider making the classifieds for site contributors only?

Therein lies a problem that can be addressed in a number of ways.

I just made a contribution. Put it in the mail today. I don't know why but lately I have felt really guilty for not doing it sooner..... so I made sure that it was a nice donation. I have been a member here for years. I have sold and bought and learned A TON. Without this site my shooting knowledge and skill would be just a fraction of what it is. I feel guilty that it took me so long to do it, so now I just have to make sure I do it regularly. . . I am truly embarrassed at how long I have been a member without donating.....For the sake of this site, hopefully, others like me will see this and feel compelled to do the same as I did.......

Jon...Looking at the registry does not tell you much. If you pay by check the status does not change.

Forum Boss: Actually we do try to update the status of everybody who pays by check. But sometimes we can't figure out from the check who the Forum member is. We don't require actual names to be included with registration, so if someone doesn't include some info (login-name, email address) associated with the Forum, it may take a while to track the person down.

I don't need a pat on the back and could really care less what the status is. There really should be no status unless the donation level has reach a certain level, say something like $500.

I disagree. I have donated only by check from my 1st donation onwards. If I am reading your reply to Jon correctly you are saying check donations do not show as a site contributor on the registry?
This should be clarified by the Forum (Boss) without a problem.
Keep in mind.....I may not be reading your response correctly.

On this Main Message Board the First Thread is from the Moderator and says "$$ Contributions-- Make Sure We Have You Listed". The Moderator tells what to do if you make a contribution and you do not get credit for it. His first message was posted on 10-30-2009.

The Fourth Thread is from the Forum Boss and is entitled "A Word About Donations" and offers more discussion about site monetary contributions.

I sent a donation some time ago and didn't get the ack. Send a PM, still no ack... So I'm guessing there may be others. Don't judge us all by the site contributor status. It may not be totally accurate. Great forum and great peeps.

Thanks to da boss! I need to send in more soon.

Wow only 150, sad, I contribute every now and then, last quarter included, hell your are guilting me into contributing again. I will do it now before I spend all my paypal funds on something stupid.

Done, it only takes 1 minute.

On a separate note, this site has a tone that is unlike any other I visit, helpful, for sure, interesting conversations/arguments/flaming/Irony/blasting each other, but always in a pretty respectful manner, not overly respectful, no tip toeing around the moderators, but just right. Good job to the mods and members here, lets give them some of your Christmas stocking money, or if you were naughty, sell the coal you got and send a slice to the forum.

Chuck,

Thank you for initiating this thread. As a result, I've donated again.

It is very important that we show our on-going financial support to sustain this high quality site. Hopefully we'll see many first time donations during this first quarter of 2014.

Your welcome Don....It was the Daily Bulletins figures that go me going. Best site. Great folks. 23,600 members......150 donations in the last quarter......somethings really wrong. The quality is way too high and the numbers way too low. I would not know where to go without it. And I am not even mentioning the people I have met through the site that have provided me with info through PM's, and I'm talking about area's that go far beyond shooting accurately.
Your closing paragraph says it all.
Chuck

I visited this site for quite some time before I realized it was a donation supported site, trying to give some benefit of doubt but am sure you are correct in your assessment for more than a few.

The non-contributors basically running a business in the classifieds remind me of the leaches that we are all supporting with our taxes. It is truly pathetic. >:( You know who you are.

I love seeing the people who join and without any posts to the forum or contribution they have a ton of stuff for sale OR better yet selling for someone else who isn't even a member on the forum. This site isn't a free yard sale site. It is much better than that and it needs to be kept that way
