confused about calibration weights.

Not sure why you are powering down to restart to calibrate, if a scale is warm, do calibrate, do not turn it off. However, in general, it looks like you may have a problem scale.

Because I did it exactly like the instructions said and the instruction started with powering the scale on I was trying not to screw anything up

I have the manual in front of me and no where does it say turn on or off before the description for either calibration.

Hey bud, I really don't care and don't want to get into an argument over what is or not in a manual - perhaps yours is a newer one - mine is 6 years old. I only commented because I was surprised. Good luck.

if it werent for bad luck i wouldnt have any luck at all when it comes to scales. when i first noticed the scale acting up i searched craigslist and found a rcbs 5-10 and had it shipped to me. i never realized there were multiple versions, guess which one i bought? ill give you a hint it isnt grains......

im still waiting for a response from oldwillknot before sending out the gempro to my weigh but it looks like i may be looking for yet another scale to hold me over untill i get it back. i dont think i want to mess with conversions every time i want to weigh something

The copy I have like THIS ONE does
I think that suggestion was written for those who've just received a new scale. None of the digitals I've had need to be turned off then on again prior to re-calibrating. If a scale's been moved to a new location or to clean up underneath) it's wise to turn it off before doing so in which event turning it on again then recalibrating is a good idea, along with making sure it's leveled out properly once again.

Are you running your GemPRO entirely off batteries? Take note of their caveat about battery contacts if you haven't already. Running off a power adapter's my preferred method though there are situations where this can introduce problems too if your line current's not stable.

Haven't posted it yet but I have an accurate, gently used Denver Instruments MMX123 for sale (with manual, 100g calibration weight and factory US power supply) that's served me very well for five or six years: $185.00 shipped CONUS via USPS Priority FlatRate. PM me here if interested.

Sorry I didn't get a notification of your reply spClark. Nope never ran it off batteries. As for turning it on or off before calibration I've tried both restarting and not and it seemed to make no difference. I give up worrying about it. I'm sending it in Monday morning for repair/replacement. If it comes back working like it should I'll buy a spare for the next time it goes crazy, if it comes back still acting up I'll splurge on one of those fx120 or gd503 scales everyone likes. In the mean time I've already ordered a chargemaster combo and another rcbs 5-10 beam scale but in grains this time. I still don't know what to do with the metric 5-10 in grams, I doubt I could get anywhere near the $60 I paid for it if I sold it.

I'm also still wondering what quality/class calibration weights are good enough to trust but aren't going to cost me a kidney.

I bought a set of "Check" weights that are not for calibrating, but for making sure the scale reads what it's supposed to.

The set came with...
1 x 0.50 grains
1 x 1.00 gr.
2 x 2.00 gr.
1 x 5.00 gr.
2 x 10.00 gr.
1 x 20.00 gr.

I honestly can't remember how much I paid for the set.
I use them every time I reload.
Trust but verify !

Grams to grains are a very simple conversion. My lab scales measure in grams, a mailing label with the gram to grains conversion for my typical weight span is mounted on the front. I do not find that as an inconvenience. Life can be difficult at times, but there is no need to make life any more difficult than it is.

I picked up the rcbs deluxe set the other day to use as check weights but I would still like those have some good calibration weights that I trust also.
