CONED BOLT QUESTION

I picked up a PTG coned bolt from a friend of mine and I want to turn the front taper off to make it like a regular bolt. Have any of you ever done this. I have a fixture to hold the bolt, no problem. I already have 2 barrels threaded and chambered for my 700 single shot I want to use it on.
Thanks
Tarey

Not sure you can do that? But honestly I guess I dont know the specific bolt you speak of. You might be able to cone the breach on the barrels though? I did this once years back and it all measured and went well.

Have had both M16 and Sako extractor fitted to PTG coned bolts and don't see how you could do that with those extractors. If it has a Rem. type extractor, maybe it would work. I'd call PTG and ask them. As mentioned above, you could also remachine the barrels for the coned bolt if you do your own work -- otherwise $$$.

If you're going to use it as a single shot, then you leave it as a cone. A regular bolt works fine for a single shot too, but a coned bolt is the Cadillac.

I assume when he says he has 2 barrels chambered already that the tenon is cut for a standard bolt nose which is why he is wanting to modify the coned bolt.

Coned bolts are made for single shot actions

My guess is coned bolts originally were designed for smooth feeding in repeaters. The Winchester pre-64, Classic, and CRF FN M-70s, are coned and feed exceptionally well. I think the Winchester 54 and Krag were coned as well, but I'd have to engage in an intense level of research that requires opening my safe to look at a Krag and getting out the DeHaas book for the 54.

Regardless, I think coned bolts for single shots came later.

But as you know...he can't have it both ways. I'd prefer the coned bolt and convert the other bbls to it, rather than the other way around. Just my 2 cents and banks are now charging to take change. So.....

Win. 54's have the same coned bolt/breech system as the early Mod. 70 and so does the Springfield 1903/-03A3/A4 and 1917 Enfield, which is why they all feed so well. The Krag is not really a coned breech type, having a swept back lug (has only 1 lug) like a coned bolt, but with a bit of the bolt front protruding forward of the lug similar to the Rem. 700 (but shorter) and the back of the barrel is flat with only the chamber edge slightly radiused to aid loading.

If the barrels are counterbored for the standard Remington bolt, you could modify the barrels to fit the bolt. If the bolt uses a Sako style extractor, you could probably modify the bolt but without having it in my hand, I can't say for sure. How deep is the boltface recess? What is the headspace measurement? If headspace is correct, it may be possible to alter the bolt. I suspect the boltface recess is .125 which means there will be plenty-o-clearance ahead of the bolt but it would be OK. A lot of "if's" here though, since I haven't even seen pictures. WH
