I am in the cutting tool buying mode now and I would like to know what you more experienced guys are using to cut your crowns and cone breeches with.

I would like to be able to use replaceable insert tools but I can grind if I have to.

Part / Model #'s and pictures of the tools (hand ground ones) would be great if you have them.

Thanks,
Dennis

How are you holding that cutter?
Reamer holder, Drill Chuck in Tailstock, ???

I always grind my own cutters for doing crowns and such..
The replaceable inserts I use for threading are tossed when they are at the end of there life time.... They are carbide and trying to sharpen a 32TPI cutter would drive me over the top of sanity..... For the few dollars invested buying new is the way I go..

Dennis, you want to single point your crowns and cones. I personally use carbide insert tooling for just about everything I do now. For general turning and facing, as well as crowning and cones, I use DCMT inserts. With a quick change tool post, you can have as many holders as you wish. I have a separate tool set up for each operation...

The crowning tool he is using has floating pilots like a reamer.
It depends on how you want to use it.
Floating reamer holder or on center and a wrench.

"DCMT inserts"?

I'm not up on this particular acronym.

This is what he is talking about.

Basically a boring bar indexable carbide bit. This one would work just fine for cutting crowns and other small inside stuff. I usually use a TNMG in a regular turning holder to cut crowns but to each his own.
