cone bolt head ?

Hey guys, had a bolt head question. I am currently having a "defiance"
single shot action built . My sales dude recomended going with a cone bolt face. Wondering if any one has experience in this department. Would love to know the advantage/disadvantage of this option. Cant say enough good about the customer service so far.

With a cone bolt face the round will feed by throwing it to the action, a rem. bolt face you have to feed the round into the chamber......jim

for a single shot a coned bolt is "nice-to-have" For some crazy reason, I prefer Remington extraction with the "3 rings of steel" for safety. This is not an option with coned bolts: you will need to use a Sako, sliding plate, or mini-M16 extractor. Got my first coned bolt action from Defiance recently. The 308 bolt face works fine, but ejection is not as crisp and forceful as I'm used to with my Defiance Remington-style bolts. The 2nd coned bolt, a 223REM, did not eject at all. Defiance is in the middle of making me a new one: their Sako extractor cut was off and prevented proper ejection. If I had to do it again, I'd go with a Remington bolt face and extractor: simple, safe, reliable and the same as my other 3 Defiance rifles. It's totally personal preference.

+1 on this. I do like the safety of the Remington 3 rings of steel. I have personally known of Sako extractor accidents. I have never had a feeding problem.

I like the coned-bolt approach on my BAT SV's and will go that way with any ensuing builds. The reason they make 'em more than one way is because there is always more than one opinion. I've seen a bunch of "blown-up" guns at my range and cannot say the Remington's fared any better than the others. Not sure any of the custom action makers have adopted the "three rings of steel" but I sure do see lots of coned bolts.

Have you seen a Sako extractor blown down the raceway? It can be very nasty. I will only use an extractor like the Kelbly's or the M16 type extractor.

With a coned bolt, you have a matching funneled breech(~30deg), which allows better feeding with single shots.

The cone bolt clones I have encountered have a sliding extractor in a track over a detent ball and spring or a M-16 style extractor with a spring and pin holding it in. With a catistrophic failure the extractor can be a factor with any of them but the Sako style extractor has little holding it in place a spring and a little leverage.

I have seen several Remingtons let go and the front ring usually goes before the folt face.
in any case it is not a pretty site.
