Cone bolt barrell machining

Don't know where to ask this question but here goes. I have a 700 SA 6BRX that I am looking to maybe use a new bolt for. The barerel is machined for a standard 700 bolt but I am thinking of using a cone bolt. How involved is this? Can I just set up and machine the correct angle or is this a complete rechamber job?

I would not cone (machine) a 3 rings of steel Remington factory bolt. If you want a cone bolt start from scratch with a new replacement bolt. You have a couple of extractor options. The only aftermarket bolt maker I know of is PT&G. There are several custom clone makers who offer cone faced bolts i.e. Kelblys, Pierce, Bordon come to mind.

I will be using a new PTG cone bolt. I am wondering about machining the existing barrel that has a standard contour.

I've done this several times myself and I cut off about 3/8 to start then I coned the breech set the shoulder back and then rechambered. Came out great.

What benefit are you hoping to achieve with a coned bolt? I ask this because I have 3 custom actions with Remington-style bolt-face and a fourth (single-shot) with a coned bolt. If I had to do it again, all my actions would have remington bolt faces. All my remingtons have been trouble-free. The coned bolt / M16-extractor does not extract/eject as well. This may be a manufacturer problem, but the point is the Remington system is well-proven and trouble-free...and the safest choice. Why fix what is not broken???

PS. Coned bolts are only appropriate for single-shot actions.

PS. " Coned bolts are only appropriate for single-shot actions "

The 03 Springfields and the old Model 70 Winchesters would disagree with you on that statement...

Ive seen both of those actions bolts...and they sure didnt appear to be "coned" to my eyes. Nothing like modern bolts that chest beat about cones bolts..???

I don't know about the Springfield as I've not seen one in years but the control round feed model 70 is coned. I've got a tubb 2000 on order at the moment and of what I've read its got a coned bolt face. They must feed pretty well since the across the course guys seem to love them. All of my target rifles are coned, I can't find any fault with them.

A lot of guys that used to shoot NRA XTC matches with a bolt gun would use a cone bolt face because it facilitates smoother feeding of the round into the chamber from the magazine.

My BAT 3Ls & Nesika K have coned breechs, but are all single shots, while the Pierce actions in two Eliseo repeater tubeguns are configured like stock M700s with a bolt nose recess. While logic dictates the Pierces should feed smoother if they had a coned breech, they're really slick as-is (one's a 6BR in a R5; the 2nd is a 6.5x47 in a RTS) and feed without a hitch.

Guess there's enough demand for the coned bolts to make it worth Dave's time to set up for & make them, but I've not seen any reason to go that route with actions that were originally set up with a bolt nose recess.
