Concealed carry opinions. lcr 38+p or.....

Im currently considering a pistol for concealed carry that is a little more comfortable and safe with one in the chamber then my m&p 9mm and springfield r. officer 1911. My current thoughts are between the LCR 38+p (possibly 357), or similar small type revolvers, or though a little on the bigger end a sig p2022 with decocker.. I really like the LCR's size and fit but I am concerned with accuracy and stopping power.

Re: Concelled carry opinions. lcr 38+p or.....

I carry a Glock 23 (40 S&W)... It is "small-ish" yet big enough for controlled fire. A 40 is very deadly with the right bullets and A LOT more accurate than I will ever be with a pistol. It's functioning has been flawless, which is an absolute necessity in a fight. I can not say enough good about it. BUT like anything else in pistols, you MUST try one on for size. How a pistol handles for YOU is paramount. If it is not just like an extension of your arm, and feel VERY comfortable when you grip it, it is not for you! BUT after all is said and done, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE... However, remember this saying: "Practice does NOT make perfect! PERFECT practice makes perfect!" Under stress, you WILL revert back to your training / practice!

Re: Concelled carry opinions. lcr 38+p or.....

i considered some glock models when i got my M&P. i cant get used to the grip angle. Also with one in the chamber the only thing that prevents a problem is the small piece in the trigger correct? I will not carry one in the chamber with these designs.

Re: Concelled carry opinions. lcr 38+p or.....

I carried one for quite awhile on the force with zero problems.. Use the correct holster and good training and there should be no problems.. BUT YOU have to be comfortable with what you are carrying..

I carry a 2 1/4" barreled Ruger SP101 in .357 Magnum with CT laser grips. Very concealable and filled with 158 gr. Hard Cast checked SWC's and a bunch of 2400, should I miss the fireball will get them!!! ;D Not a load for the recoil sensitive! ::)

Re: Concelled carry opinions. lcr 38+p or.....

go shoot a compact 357 mag with full house loads and the come back and ask again.

short bbls mean low velocity(except for the new short bbl ammo) which means 38 loads suck in under 3" bbls.
i carry a 3" with 140 xtp's or 158 xtps.....cause they work and a can hit with them.

Re: Concelled carry opinions. lcr 38+p or.....

This is why i am asking. The lcr fits so well as a comfortable concealed weapon that i have to at least consider it. the lower velocities and reduced accuracy are the things I have to figure out. Can you suggest a gun that is at least comparable for ease of concealment but offers real world stopping power? I dont want to waste my money. Or am i better served by carrying my full framed semi autos.

Re: Concelled carry opinions. lcr 38+p or.....

classic example.....nearly 40% of the powder is burnt AFTER the bullet leaves the muzzle....only 900 fps in mag load max and only 100 fps faster velocity than i get in a 3" 38 with a 158.....

Re: Concelled carry opinions. lcr 38+p or.....

my decision was a taurus 3" 38 spcl and a star bm in 9mm
i hand load for each.
hornady advertises the xtps as to begin opening at as low as 800 fps.

38 140 xtps shot in a 9mm at way over 900 fps are pretty impressive

I guess I am the one with a ladies gun here but I have a LCP and carry in my front pocket with a pocket holster..I can go without knowing I have anything at all, an LCR 38 or 357 would bark when needed..

At the Great American Outdoor Show I was handling some Walther pistols (PPQ I think) and thought the slide fit and trigger pulls were excellent. A P99c in 40 sw would be a good compact carry pistol.

I have a M&P Shield Real thin less than a inch ,got it in 9mm Luger can also get it in 40 SW i carry with one in the chamber with no problems want fire till you pull the trigger striker fire design, also has a safety if you are so inclined that can be taken off as you remove it from the holster easily. Also real reliable and accurate. I carry in a inside the belt holster real comfortable.

Chevytruck,
If I might make a suggestion based on years of experience in LE and Homicide investigations. IMO, forget the .357's and .38PlusP stuff. Go with the 40 cal which has much better stopping power simply because the .357 has tons of power, hence will go through some idiot and keep on going. And anything you might get involved in will be within a shorter distance than what you shoot to practice at the range. So my point is you not only want to put the AH down (permanently) you don't want a bullet to keep going and hit some innocent and unintended victim. Yes the .38+Ps/.357's do considerable internal damage (been to plenty of autopsies). But I've also seen idiots hit with several shots and then to actually run or stagger another 50 - 100 yds before they drop dead. This isn't like Bear hunting. And that also gives them the opportunity to return fire if they are armed. A side issue many forget about is that some POS who has been a crook all their lives gets dumped, his family that hated him all along, suddenly files a wrongful death suit against the shooter and claims the POS was a darling they loved so much and they'd only feel better if you gave the family a couple hundred thousand dollars to easy their pain. What a bunch of BULL CRAP, but it happens all the time. So think about all these things long and hard before you decide on a caliber to carry. But make no mistake, do not point a weapon at anyone unless you are prepared to take the shot. Be aware of the potentials involved, but deal with the aftermath afterwards and make sure you go home to your family! Just my thoughts.

My Kimber Stainless Target II would be favorite If it didn't need suspenders to carry it around :)

Too funny! Imagine having that Kimber on one side and a Smith Highway Patrolman wheelgun on the other side. You'd wear out your shoes in no time, no to mention the potential of having your pants fall down if your suspenders gave way. (lol)

I have been carrying a Ruger LCP 380 but since I got my XD-S 45 I've been carrying it with an inside the pant holster. Maybe I was use to having the LCP but the XD-S for me is perfect and I don't feel any discomfort at all and forget most of the time I even have it on me.

Thank you for knowledgeable input shynloco. I hope I'm never in a position to have to defend myself with such force . However after working in center city Allentown pa this past summer I realized that a lot of shootings are almost a sport for gangs. There were if i remember correct 7 in almost as many weeks within a couple blocks. More recently I had an old friend threaten me with a comment. (Don't come within shooting range) the world is full of ill say, unstable people.
I want a gun that is comfortable enough that I will carry day to day but if I need to use it on someone I know that they will be stopped.

I have the LCR in 357, and I have shot it with full house mag loads. In my opinion it is remarkably controllable, especially for its size and weight. Not uncomfortable at all to me, though you do certainly know you're not shooting a .22 revolver. I normally keep it full of the 38 short barrel loads.

If I may suggest the Ruger LCR in .22 magnum shouldn't be overlooked. I started with a Glock 19 9mm, and love the gun, but it is way too large and heavy for true concealed carry. I then went to the LCR in 39 Spl. and found that after a couple hours at the range my hand was sore from shooting it. Traded it for the .22 mag. and just love it. If I was constantly in an environment of self-defense, I would want a bigger rig. But as a concealed carry in an inside-the-waist holster, the LCR is my rig. And don't discount the .22 mag. Somebody who gets double-tapped in the chest with one won't be very dangerous any more.

I also carry a Glock 23. For me, its the perfect size. Although I carry the Glock a vast majority of the time, I have a real love for 1911s, nothing fits and fills the hand like a good 1911.
