Component Scarcity: Where's the Varget

chevytruck_83 said:
everyone's mindset right now is buy what you see. even guys on here that have built up large enough supplies to last through this shortage. its kinda upsetting but to each his own I guess.
Like life in the old Soviet Union. If you saw a queue, you got in it and worried about what it was for once you got to the front. What ever it was you could resell or trade it for something else you wanted.

Doesn't say out of stock.

FWIW, my local reloading supply store had no Varget available yesterday, but had enough today that they would let me buy TWO (repeat two) pounds. Not the usual 1 lb/visit of the past several months. They said their rep had told 'em to expect an increase in Varget availability, supposedly because unspecified "difficulties" Hodgdon has experienced with some of their powders has allowed them to devote more production time to other powders like Varget.

When I mentioned the speculation I'd seen here about Varget being made in Australia and perhaps facing production and transportation delays, they said most if not all Hodgdon stick powders have been made in Australia for years, and that the production and logistics are well worked out. I did check the other Hodgdon stick powders on my shelf, Benchmark and H4895 and confirmed that they are both made down under. Learn something new every day.

It is somewhat concerning to me that most powder is made overseas now. I can't see any scenario where that will turn out to be advantageous in the future for U.S. reloaders.

I wonder what it would cost if it were made here? Even in Australia the cost of labor and environmental nonsense has to be less than it is in the US, and since the massive container ships let you send something anywhere in the world for about a penny, I suspect it ends up being cheaper for US consumers overall.

Now as far as strategic independence is concerned, you're probably right. And given a hostile government like we have now it's possible that they can (maybe already are) slow walk things through customs that they want to restrict. The solution to THAT problem is to replace the hostile government.

But most big business is global today, so it's not surprising that gunpowder is too. (I first started with Accurate powders in part because what I used was made in Israel, and I thought that was cool. In addition to AA#5 being great powder at a then-great price.)

Yep, your dealer is correct. The problem powder was the new L-32 that the government was holding up licensing etc. for import. Everything already licensed should be good to go,,,,,for now.

I still find no Varget online. A rather large local gun shop stated "Well, just get here at 10:00 every morning.". I think they may have lost a customer.

Anyone seen any Varget online?

He may have more I don't know, if he had 50lbs I would have bought it all but I was able to get 10lbs.
Wayne.

I saw Varget sitting on the shelf at a local reloading store last weekend. I saw CCI BR-4s sitting on the shelf yesterday at another local store, along with 4831sc and a bunch of various IMR and Alliant powders. They even had a bunch of 22 rimfire ammo.

The stuff is still being made, still being sold, it's just selling quickly. You can find stuff, but you have to be vigilant. You can't just wander into your local shop on a Saturday afternoon once a month and expect to have a full selection. Somebody more vigilant than that will get it first.

It seems as though things are loosening up as 4-5 months ago, there was -nothing- available, but some items will remain scarce (federal primers come to mind) until demand returns to normal.

Gentlemen , this is exactly the thinking and action that has gotton us into the short supply of reloading components mess. Buy reasonable and leave some for the rest of us.

My local supplier who was out two weeks ago and had enough last week to sell 2 pounds at a time (instead of the usual one pound), this week got a shipment of what sounded like hundreds of pounds of Varget (only - no other Hodgdon powders). I've been buying onsies over time so am up to 6 pounds on hand, so I only bought one more just to be safe. Maybe it was a one time anomaly, but at least for this powder at this store, the complete drought is over, for the moment.

Now if only I could find a supply of 70 grain Berger VLDs . . . :(

Well said Wayne. I agree with you 100%.

I don't think the shortage is from us shooters who plan ahead and buy, it is from the "others" that just buy everything they see and most of them don't even reload or have any need for it. Have seen it several times.

Right on. I saw people when this mess started buying as much powder off the shelves as their cart would hold. No rhyme or reason, just load up a cart with anything they could get their hands on. Likewise with primers. They were even joking among themselves "how much money they were going to make".

If you've been a "bulk buyer" all your life, great. So have I. I buy what I get a good deal on and can also afford. But I don't then offer it for sale at a jacked up price. I might trade for other components if I have extra of something and a need for another item.

Call it whining if you want. A privilege enjoyed by all, including those venting about the "profiteers".

amlevin,
I couldn't agree more!!! I have never sold a single thing on this forum or any other forum, or to any individual as far as that goes, I buy for my use, and don't feel I have to explain myself with each purchase I make! That's all! Happy shooting to all.
Wayne.
