Competitive shooting rookie

I would like to start shooting competitively next spring and I am considering a build or buying one from here. What caliber and specs would you all recommend for a rookie, who has a good working knowledge of shooting and reloading? My mentor is suggesting something in 6mm.
Thank you everyone.
p.s. I would like to keep my budget under $1500. Is that possible? I have a new model 70 Stealth in 308 that with my loads has been very accurate to 100 yards and am going to start 300 and go from there.
There are so many options and so many successful shooters on this site it can be a bit overwhelming.

What type of competitive shooting ?

If you're talking about F-Class just slap a bipod on that model 70 and go have some fun while you get an idea of the direction you want to go.

Your Stealth in 308Win is ideal for starting out. Varget and Sierra Matchkings in Winchester brass works well for most with Savage, Remington and Winchester rifles from the start. You have a good rifle, so use your budget on the best glass you can afford.

Scott

dskinner103, my first response is ,start slow. go to the matches with eyes and ears wide open.talk to anybody you can, don't be shy. most of the guy's and girl's at the matches like to answer question's and if they don't have an answer for ya they will piont you in the right direction. so get out there and pull some triggers. TRIGGER TIME never hurts. STP'S advice is spot on!! all best dogdude

Dogdude nailed it.

I really suggest stopping by and spending a day at a local match. Look at what guys use, see what works for yourself. 6mmBR is the best forum of its kind on the net, but remember what you paid for your anonymous internet advice. You will find the whole spectrum of shooters at a match including guys that are - or were very recently - in your shoes. They all love to help and share what they know.

Ultimately, it requires the "golden triad" to achieve ultimate precision.... accurate rifle, accurate ammo and accurate shooter. Your results will reflect the weakest of these three things, so spending too much time and money on a gun is poor economy. Get trigger time, get good first-hand help and coaching, and become a precision reloader.

Do not despair because your results will come together faster than you think. Keep it fun, and keep it realistic in terms of what you can afford, and get out and meet the guys that like shooting.

Hey there! I am in the same boat as you. I posted a new thread in the Competition forum a week ago called "Damsel Needs.." -you should check it out. I have gotten some of the best insight from lots of well-seasoned shooters and the information could help you out! Good luck sir!
His post was 10 years ago…..he hasn’t been on the forum since 2013
