Competing in the rain

What does everyone suggest for rain gear?

I'm thinking something to cover the action, I have a shooting box to hide my ammo in, hopefully my plotomatic will be ok in the rain

I have cut a shower curtain down to the length of my rifle scope. I velcro it to my rifle, draping it over my scope and action. I take the loose end and drape it over my ammo box and tuck it under the ammo box very lightly. It does a good job of keeping the moisture out of the business area of shooting. You sure don't want rain drops on your cartridges, it increases your internal pressure when you shoot them.

I would never subject my very expensive equipment to the ravages of rain to win a match. Shooting, at least for me, needs to be fun. Shooting in the rain would not be fun>>> so I won't.. I know that not shooting is NOT the answer anyone is looking for>>>it is simply a viable option.

Remember that whatever you put on the rifle it will add to your weight total. I don't know if someone would stop a match and re-weigh a rifle, but I guess they wrote the rule for a reason.

But it makes me wonder if the rain cover isn't touching the rifle is that OK to use? Like a large bucket cut in half in lengh and forms a dome. It would make the guy on televisions red green show proud for sure.

I had my best day shooting an HBR Match in Oregon in a drizzle one weekend.
Everybody was whining about the rain, some even quit. I was talking to the legendary Vern Johnson before the match, and he says "Rich, look thru your scope." I do so, and note that in the absence of wind, the light drizzle is coming straight down. He tells me "A smart man could make this a trigger pulling contest."
I end up in a 3-way tie for first, and win on X-count. I do the same thing at 200, 3-way tie and I win on X-count.
It made it pretty easy to hand out the plaques. Vern finished in second, on X-count, and the same guy finished in 3rd place both yardages.
Think of light rain as a perfect bench to target wind flag. I would much rather shoot in rain than wind.

None of your equipment is going to melt...
;)

Find a 2 gallon Zip-Loc bag with the slide-lock - it may take a little digging; not every place has them. Cut the bottom off. Slide it over the scope and action. You can cinch it closed with the slide-lock when not shooting so you don't accidentally breath on the rear lens and fog it up. Super light, maybe 1/4 oz.

For light weight rain gear look into motorcycle riding gear, like frogtogs, wont do anything for the rifle but will keep you light and dry. Im with ShootDots above i dont want to shoot in the rain.

Compact rain gear stays in my vehicle. Been caught in some rain and it’s a mess to clean up afterwards. The clear shower shower curtain is readily available and just cut a strip about 6” wider than the scope length and let draped off the sides with Velcro holding it place on top of the scope. Roll it up and keep it in your range bag always. I also keep a 100 gallon garbage bag to cover the gear.

Shot a High power match in a downpour. Did very well, but never did it again. Took days to dry everything out. After that, if the weather changed and was threatening rain for the day, we went home. Shooting just isn't that important to me.

Amen Brother! Shooting is my absolute favorite thing to do! However, screwing everything up with horrible weather >> well there is simply another day later to enjoy a match!

I wear Grundens pants and a light rain jacket for shooting in the rain. They are very comfortable and easy to put on and off. I have a tendency to want to remove the jacket when actually shooting, even if that means I will get wet to prevent it from throwing my shooting off.

If necessary, I just drape a cut down tarp over the rifle when no in use. Rain does help keep the barrel cooler while shooting.

At the FCWC last year in Connaught, we shot in the rain. The day before weighing in, the team members went to "Canadian Tire" and bought some Velcro tabs and some thick transparent plastic film. We cut and fashioned pieces that would Velcro on the port side of the rifle and then fold over the top of the rifle, covering the scope and action and extend out to cover the ammo box. There was enough room underneath to keep the scorecards dry. The rain gear was part of the weight.

When the rain started, I had just started my string. I had my rain gear with me, already to go on, which took but a few seconds. I had a rain jacket only, did not put on the rain suit pants. It was epic shooting in that get up, but this was the World's. When I finished my string, I scurried over to the tents, and then the skies really opened up and it was a washout. My rain-soaked string was cancelled and I got soaked for (Con)naught. Oh well.
