Compensator Shimming

Just purchased a ACC Brakeout Compensator for a factory threaded Remington 700. ACC supplied a pack of six different sizes to align the ports.

It looks as if all six are going to be needed for this install and even hand tightening, the ports will be slightly off. Should the shims be exposed or covered?

Anyone have any experience or should i purchase the another set of sizes at the local hardware store?

Thanks.

Does the brake thread all the way on the barrel? (it should) If so there is no reason to use all of the shims. You guess at what thickness will back off the threads the correct amount to leave the ports vertical. Screw the brake on all the way until it touches the shoulder of the barrel, back it off until the vents are vertical. Then take your shims & start sticking them in until you get the right size. It probably shouldn't go in easy. Obviously take it off & put the shim on 1st. If there is room, a thin jamb nut is a better setup.

The compensator does thread completely to the barrel but wont index correctly. I did manage to speak to tech. services at ACC. I did ask if they thought it was unusual that all six shims were needed. I was told that there are circumstances that actually require more than the six they provide. Also, the package didn't contain the rocksett needed to seal the threads but they were good enough to send another shim pack and rocksett at no cost.

Thanks
