Compact Scope

I have 2 LW varmit rifles .243 & .223 both are short barrell 20" big scopes look funny on these rifles. I have 6 X 20 leupy's What would be nice compact. I heard the Burris Timerline 4 X 16 are hard to get the proper eye reliefs. Can anyone suggest a hi magnifation compact, with better eye relief. thks.

a friend of mine likes the burris 4-12 short mags..they are parrallax adj. down to 7yrds. i believe...only problem is burris quit making them...sometimes you can find them on swafa's sample list. www.riflescopes.com..then click sample list in upper right hand corner.

The timberline replaced the old short mag, and has plenty of eye relief if the scope is mounted the right way..
No real reason to have a problem with eye relief with close to 4 inches on low power, and maybe down to 3 inches on 14 power..
The old 4x12 Burris compact is a dandy if you can find one, but the timberline is as good...

I have a Leupold 4x12 VX 2 mounted on my Rem Model 7's (20" and 18.5" barrels), a 4x14 Leupold VX3 on my Browning X bolt stalker short action (22" barrel). These scope are full size scopes but fit nicely on these rifles.

The one thing I've learned in using my short barrelled rifles for varmint hunting is that to obtain the best results use an adquate power scope with good light gathering capabilities. I like nothing less than a 12x full size scope.

The various compact scopes, while they look nice on these short barrel rifles, did not perform well for me due to poor light gathering capibility, small field of veiw, and insufficent magnification. I'm speaking here in terms of varmint hunting - small targets at extended ranges.

Preach, isn't the Timberline made in the Phillipines(?) and the Short Mag made in the US? I have both and the Short Mag is superior in mine, i.e. turrets, clarity, etc. JMHO.

Agree 100%. Those "short mag" scopes were designed just for small, light, hard-kicking magnum rifles - therefore the long eye relief, small size objective, etc. I did try Timberline on a rimfire and it worked to the point where I was up against the windage turret limits (another shortcoming of this type of scope of this scope is their small adjustment range); also, mounting it so far forward to get the proper eye relief looks about as bad as a too-large scope.
My 6-24x40 Bushnell 4200 (the side-focus model that is no longer made) is the smallest high power FS scope that I can recall; there were some compromises made though, naturally. And those new Leupold VX-2s are a handy size and weight; even a 6-18x doesn't look proportionately out of place on my smallish Rem. LVSF.
