I have a Leupold 4x12 VX 2 mounted on my Rem Model 7's (20" and 18.5" barrels), a 4x14 Leupold VX3 on my Browning X bolt stalker short action (22" barrel). These scope are full size scopes but fit nicely on these rifles.
The one thing I've learned in using my short barrelled rifles for varmint hunting is that to obtain the best results use an adquate power scope with good light gathering capabilities. I like nothing less than a 12x full size scope.
The various compact scopes, while they look nice on these short barrel rifles, did not perform well for me due to poor light gathering capibility, small field of veiw, and insufficent magnification. I'm speaking here in terms of varmint hunting - small targets at extended ranges.
Agree 100%. Those "short mag" scopes were designed just for small, light, hard-kicking magnum rifles - therefore the long eye relief, small size objective, etc. I did try Timberline on a rimfire and it worked to the point where I was up against the windage turret limits (another shortcoming of this type of scope of this scope is their small adjustment range); also, mounting it so far forward to get the proper eye relief looks about as bad as a too-large scope.
My 6-24x40 Bushnell 4200 (the side-focus model that is no longer made) is the smallest high power FS scope that I can recall; there were some compromises made though, naturally. And those new Leupold VX-2s are a handy size and weight; even a 6-18x doesn't look proportionately out of place on my smallish Rem. LVSF.
