common powder for use in .338LM and .308Win. ?

Hello,

What is your prefered common powder you use for both .338 Lapua Mag and .308 Winchester ?

If it matters, I will also be trying to produce a common .308 load for Remington PSS bolt, Seekins SP10 AR10, and Springfield Super Nat. Match M1A guns.
I don't know how doable this last part will be...

I'm probably wrong, but I would think you actually have a better chance of reaching your second goal, than finding a powder that will work properly in both .308 and .338 LM?

There is too much case capacity (for bore size) difference in these 2 cartridges to even begin to use a common powder for both IMO and get decent results, even using light bullets in the 338 LM and heavier in the 308 Win.

Look at either a reloading manual or an on-line reloading site (i.e. Hodgdon Reloading) and see if maybe something crosses over to both. - H-4350 or IMR-4350 burning range rate powder would be about as close as I would even venture to guess & the use of Quick-Load or a program such as to achieve a safe starting point.

I personally like slower powders (v/v N570, RL-33) in the 338 and mid-range (H-4895, IMR-4064, RL-15) burning rate powders in the 308 Win.
- There is quite a bit of difference in these two cartridges and finding common-ground where one smokeless powder for both isn't going to be an easy task.

IMO, I would approach each cartridge as an individual endeavor with what is currently available under the present market conditions which is doable rather than seek a one powder solution for both and end up with less than desired performance from both.

My .02

Thanks!
I am a newbie, so, trying to get by with as little I can to start with.
I understand there isn't a common ground between the two.

Thanks again for the schooling...

You may find one powder that will work in both cartridges but I don’t think you will find “one powder” that will work well in both cartridges, you may be handicapping yourself. I shoot both and the powders I use are miles apart. I think there are powders that will work though if your determined.
