Comb Risers - A Cheap and Effective Option

At the range last week, a shooter I met showed me an innovative method for raising the height of the comb on his sporter stock. The best part, it was simple, easy to install, and cheap ($9 for a 70" length roll.

He wrapped the stock with self-grip athletic tape bandage, 4" width. He purchased at CVS; it was black in color and blended well with the stock. I examined it and it was sturdy and did not move. He claimed that it held up in the field.

I have used a variety of methods in the past with less that desirable results so I might give this one a try on one of my sporter stocks with low comb height. As most of you know, having good cheek weld is essential to precision shooting.

For just a few more bucks I would opt for a Bear Creek Kit. Adjustible with the supplies shims and has a neoprene cover to keep them in place. I use one on my sharps because going out to 1,000 yards you need to move the vernier waaaaay up...

How did you keep the riser from moving, i.e., shifting left to right?

Maybe I installed mine incorrectly, but the riser would shift on me. Any hints welcome.

You have to be careful to relieve all the stress in the elastic. Kinda hard to explain but once you get the thing where you want it, take a finger and go all around under the edges of the elastic to make sure it does not have any twist or strain in it from the installation process. Just visualize how you do your drawers when they dont feel right :):)

Thanks - I will retry it and see if I can improve on the past installation which didn't work too well for me, the insert would move when I acquired a solid cheek weld.

Paint rollers and ace bandage work as well.
I do something similar. I use hot water pipe insulation and coban. Coban I think is the name for that acebandage type stuff that sticks to itself without adhesives. So it's not sticky. I think it's also used like athletic tape on athletes and horses.

However if I am going to put in place a store bough comb riser solution, it must have a strap that goes around the buttplate. Anything else just keeps creeping forward due to recoil.

In the military, I used cutout pieces of sleeping pad and an Israeli bandage. Now that I have left, I use cutout pieces of sleeping pad and an ace bandage.

I’ve done this for years with all of my hunting rifles. This one is a Remington 700 in .308, I used a piece of 1/2” foam and wrapped the cheek riser (and just about the entire rifle) with the stretchy athletic tape that only sticks to itself. A big plus is that the stretchy tape acts as a great sound deadener in the blind or my deer stands. The last plus is that when it’s 10F the rifle isn’t cold to the touch. I’ve used this technique for over 15 years now. This wrapping has been on the rifle for about 8-9 years of heavy hunting and it hasn’t moved a bit.

Where do you get your coban? I'm always ending up with something awful like purple
Good hint, go to Family Farm and Home and you can buy it for under $2 a roll. They call it Horse Wrap (they use it to wrap horse’s legs for injuries or during training).

Yea, thanks - just so happens I ran into that guy yesterday at the range and he gave me the same info, he called it Vet Wrap and told me where to get it cheaper than CVS.

I examined his set up again and I must say, I like it a lot. It's solid, does not shift and you can make it any height you want.

It might be just me, or my beard....but even with adjustable combs ilike some sort of material over top. If a think material. Then again, now that I think about it... I dont shoot free recoil. I like a snug stock in the shoulder and a good cheek weld
