coaxial front rest

Any comments on the Caldwell coaxial controlled front rest. such as it's smoothness, does it stay level any rocking ect, I know it's not an $700 rest but are the majority of the shooters happy with them.

I certainly would NOT use them for registered competition. For informal limited use they may meet your needs. Extended use may be problematic....they incorporate steel balls which ride on soft aluminum plates which after heavy use start to wear grooves and although there is a tension adjustment, you will eventually run out of tension... so much for a "controlled" rest. Also the Caldwell bags are lacking in construction.....too flimsy to maintain their shape.

I have used a Caldwell Firecontrol frontrest. I can't recommend it. I have used a Farley and think they are great. I currently have a ShadeTree and I am pleased with it. I would strongly suggest saving up and getting a higher end coaxial if you have an plans of competition. If you are just playing at the range, the FireControl is ok. Luck, Tim

after buying one and doing some mods to it, its great. removed the plate inside and trued it, polished it, and modified the tenson srews. also made a new base out of 3/4 inch plate steel. i replaced the front rest bag with one from protektor for about $30. changing the bag and making mods to the tenson screw made the world of a difference. its still not a farley though.

I remember looking at the coaxial rests thinking they were going to make all the difference in the world in my shooting. When I started shooting competition, my friend loaned me a old rest he purchased through Midway. Well, like most of us, I was reading everything I could find on accuracy, wind, loading, testing, etc and ran into this article. 2005 National Champ Jeff Cochran ...

Well much to my supprise, on the very first photo, there sat the exact rest I was using. I read the article and thats when it dawned on me. I didn't need to improve my equipment, I needed to improve my technique. That was 3yrs ago. I still shoot off the same rest with great results. The only thing I added was dryer sheets and practice. Oh yeah, I'm never giving the rest back...ha.

2 cents......
