COAL

I have a REM 700 Kreiger 14:1barrel 6mmBR Norma. No turn, 0.065" free bore. I shoot it on a bench for fun and working up loads. It's used for GH hunting. 68 GR Berger Match seem the most accurate from what I have tried. My question is: Is there any jump to the lands that should work in most guns? I don't feel like shooting large amounts of ammo trying different COAL. It's hard to hold a hunting rifle dead still on the target. No tracking at all. I have to reset the sandbag after every shot. In Tony Boyer's interview he states that he tries 0.003" off, 0.0" and 0.003" in. If none of these work he doesn't feel the barrel will shoot well.

I have a Savage LRPV with a 26" 12 twist barrel in 6BR. It too likes Berger 68's best of what I have tried, with Bart's Ultra 68, second best. I've tried 0.020" jump, 0.010" jump, and 0.010" jam. The 0.010" jam gives the smallest groups, but not by large amounts. The jam may do 0.250" groups while the jump gives 0.300" groups at 100 meters.

I think there is more to be gained in accuracy by doing a ladder test and finding the sweet spots for velocity. For my gun it has turned out to be about 3400-3440 fps, using BR-4 primers, and 34.4 grains of Varget. If you have a heavy barrel of the same length, you may find around that velocity works in your gun as well. The load is a little beyond listed maximum, so you would be prudent to work up to it.
