COAL?

Howdy,

I'm messed up. I finally got my 6BR project finished up,,just waiting on new scope rings) so loaded up some rounds today so I can start breaking the bbl in as soon as the scope is mounted. I decided to just use some old Nosler 80's for the job. And then I ran into problems.

Load From a Disk states the COAL should be 2.441. Great. Loaded them up...and the bolt won't close. Checked a new case against a loaded one, neck dia) and they are nearly identical. No problems closing the bolt on an empty. Got to thinking and checked the COAL for the 6BR Remington. 2.150. The bolt closes. Tried another at 2.20. The bolt closes. Now I'm getting pissy and my head's banging. Tried another at 2.360 and the bolt won't quite close. CLUSTERF*CK. Any ideas? This is a mess... -Rod-

I'm 9 months into this build already because someone decided to try and swipe the rifle from it's case when it was shipped here from McMillan's in April. It took them 3 months to undo the damage. I'm not eager to lose my rifle yet again, but it seems like this is all wrong, like it was cut as a hybrid between 6br Rem and Norma. It was cut too long for one, too short for the other. Like you I have no idea if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I know it's not what I asked for or expected. My instinct is telling me to wrap it around a post and move on. ;) -Rod-

Yeah, I know I'm not deep enough. Or too deep. That's my point. It all depends on which case I assume I'm working off of. That's why I'm frustrated. I really don't want 3 miles of bullet jump and am also unsure of what's going to happen with pressures if this is a long 6BR Rem or a short 6BR Norma. Maybe it doesn't matter. Maybe it does. -Rod-

Rod,

Just use a Stoney Point gauge and find the distance to the lands with your preferred bullet. Then seat the bullet so it goes another .010-.015". As long as you have .150" or more bearing surface,i.e. full diameter shank) in the neck you will be OK.

You can then play with seating depths. But with the 105s, 106s, and 107s, most 6BR rifles shoot them very well .010-.015" into the lands. It's a good place to start.

FYI, I have about .090" freebore measured PT&G style. With a 105 Scenar my COAL is 2.355", .015" into the lands.

And the winner is... 2.210!
It's not what I expected but it'll probably be suitable, especially since these rounds are just for bbl break in. I mounted the scope last night, seated the rounds I made up to the proper depth and I'm ready to go. This first batch is 80gr Nosler BT's over 31.0g of Varget. I need to get a new 9 volt battery for my Chrony I guess. If the weather is good hopefully I'll get out and shoot this week.
