COAL with 28 Nosler and 195gr Berger Hybrid

I am trying to spec a 28 Nosler reamer. I have Seekins Precision AI bottom metal in a McMillan A5 stock using a Borden LSR action.

I have several thousand of the old Jimmy Knox 180gr VLDs that I would prefer to shoot but the Berger 195gr is the new latest and possibly greatest so . . .

  1. What COAL are people running with the 28 Nosler and Berger 195 Hybrids while keeping the bullets boat tail and bearing surface junction above the neck shoulder junction? Seems .300 is the free bore length that gets mentioned most when reading through old threads. But that will far surpass the max COAL in a AI .300 win mag.
  2. Anyone running considerably less than .300 free bore and having excellent results, what is your free bore and COAL?
  3. Finally, does anyone know if I can use the 3.775 length Accurate Mag .300 Win Mag magazine in AI bottom metal? I assume one could not use Accurate Mag's .300 win mag 3.850 OAL magazine in AI bottom metal?

TroyG,
Since the 7mm 195 EOL bullet is a hybrid. I suggest you start at .015 off the lands and work back from there. Dave Kiff MAY have an idea of what most shooters are using for free bore with this bullet/cartridge combination . Or make a dummy round with the bullet seated to where the bearing / boat tail junction is even with or slightly above this junction and work out your throat length from there. I would suggest finding your seating depth accuracy node first before making any magazine/bottom metal changes.
Take care,

There`s a guy here who has built a few 28 Noslers specifically to shoot the 195.

Do a search and the info is there, I remember reading about the COAL in one of his threads.

Sorry I can`t recall his name right now, my first guess would be Ryan Pierce, but I`ve been wrong before.

Phil.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I decided not to set up a reamer for the 195s at this point and went with a freebore that will hopefully allow me to shoot old 180gr JLK bullets of which I have several thousand and then shoot the 180gr Hybrid. I hope to be able to feed from an AI Magazine and use the Seekins AICS bottom metal and Mcmillan A5 stock I had sourced out with my Borden LSR action. Project has been sitting for a couple years. I went with a .240 freebore as a compromise.
