COAL on 52/53g bullets from AR

Shot some 53g vmax over Benchmark and 73g ELDM over IMR8208XBR yesterday. Loaded the 53s to 2.260" and the 73s to 2.3" in ASC mags. These were the winners. Good enough for a gasser with Hornadys and throwing some loads together. Not going to mess much more with it. 53s will be a nice truck/calling load for dogs and the 73s will play on the LR steel targets out to 800.

On the vast majority of AR's, mag length is the determining factor to how long the bullet can be seated. So, with very few exceptions, you're jumping anyway. I'd start at mag length and start backing away from the lands .003 at a time.
this has been my experience as well, I typically load the 53's, all bullets really, to 2.255" to avoid feeding problems at the range

I'm using ASC mags that allow 2.3" COAL

2.260" worked just fine with the 53s and is about 15 off the lands. I started at 2.3" and it was getting stuck from jam. Went down in .010" increments until it just fell out of the barrel.

With the tipped bullets you end up with bullet ogives further from the lands because of mag length restrictions and usually closer to the case mouth. Seating shorter coal(max mag clearance) moves the ogive closer to case mouth and further from the lands. If the bullet needs to closer to the lands to improve accuracy, cartridge length may have magazine fit issues.
