CNC Projectiles Coming Soon

It looks like my wish for really high BC 6.5mm projectiles may be a reality sooner than I thought. Same goes for all the other caliber bullets as well. The Feb Target Shooter Ezine has an article on bronze cnc turned projectiles for the same cost as the bullets we buy now.

Dont know how hard on the bore bronze might be but this is the start of a step forward for bullet BC like we have never seen before.

Look here on page 9: http://www.targetshooter.co.uk/

I just hope the bullet manufacturers dont take the business off shore to China to maximise their profits. Hopefully using cnc machines means that the manufacturing costs are reasonably low and the process simpler than lead core, copper jacket manufacture.

I wonder if bronze being low friction (used as bearings etc) will be completely different in pressure sealing and will require different types of twist etc to work? One thing for sure is that the bullet making business is in for some changes and probably barrel makers as well.

I would think CNC time would be more expensive than swaging jacketed bullets, but who knows. I would also debate whether or not a CNC lathe can produce dimensional tolerances on par with hand swaged bullets. Another thing is that Lead is more dense than bronze, so to make a bullet of similar weight will require a longer bullet, meaning more bearing surface and higher pressures - I would guess thats why the bullets shown have grooves cut in the bearing surface. Longer bullets require faster twists as well - do barrel makers even make twists fast enough for heavy bronze bullets?

there is an interesting article here: http://www.riflebarrels.com/articles/50calibre/material_50cal_bullets.htm

If you worry about the long bearing surface winchester made the 2 diameter bullets for the 264 mag many years ago

Everything Old is New Again !

The French used solid Bronze Boatail Bullets in

their 8mm Lebel ammunition during WW 1.

Balle " D ".

Don't know if the were made on Screw Machines

or impact formed from rod stock.
