CMP Talladega 600

Was fortunate to be able to participate from the 11-14 thru 11-20 at the CMP matches at Talladega Shooting Park in Alabama. For those who have not been able to shoot on this range, you are missing a good time. The matches were run this past week on schedule with very little to mostly no problems. Matches were on time and run in a very nice and consistent manner. The experience from check in, picking up your packet, and firearms inspections was handled in a very pleasant manner. For me, an event change, my choice, a score card that had been skipped and not recorded were handled in a quick and friendly manner. Awards were done in the club house in a timely manner. This was my first large scale CMP Games event, it was so nice, I am looking forward to my next trip to CMP Talladega, looks to become a regular on my schedule. If you have a few older rifles setting around and want to have a great time, you should consider trying these types of matches. Even with the unusually cold weather and light rain on Monday and Tuesday it was still not to bad, with a large covered firing line, and the firing located over the hill from the club house, the winds were not terrible on the competitors and range officers. Hot hands heating packets helped a lot.

I want to thanks all the personnel that traveled to CMP Talladega from Camp Perry, the Locale CMP Park personnel, and the Firing line officers. They made the week one of the best shooting trips of 2022.

thanks, Kymike

I went to the clinic on the first day (nov 14). Very informative and well ran. The price for a days instruction was $50. This included instruction, ammo and rifles supplied. I was impressed with the place and thought it was a very good experience. Thumbs up for me to Cmp at Talladega.

It was a whole weeks worth. There were matches each day. Pistol and rifle.

There were 7 days of matches and training opportunities.

In 2022 on Monday there were Range officer classes, Rifle Marksmanship with an EIC match afterwards and a Benchrest Garand match.

Tuesday had a GSM Master Instructor class, Pistol Marksmanship class with EIC match. Rifle practice on rifle range 1 and Pistol practice on pistol range. In the afternoon, the first Garand/Springfield/Vintage Military/Modern Military Match (GSMM) was held.

Wednesday had a GSMM in the morning, 22 RF Pistol match, late morning a 4 person team rifle match and 2 EIC 22 RF pistol matches.

Thursday had a 2 person rifle match, 2 centerfire pistol match, EIC pistol match, Congressional 30 individual rifle match.

Friday had a EIC rifle match, CMP 45 pistol match, 2 M1 carbine matches, 2 Service pistol matches and 1911 pistol matches, M1A match, Cookout and Awards for the first 5 days.

Saturday had 4 GSMM matches, 3 Rimfire Sporter matches, Rimfire Benchrest match and Awards for Saturdays matches.

Sunday was the Vintage Sniper Match which was completed by 11:30 am and VSM Awards were presented shortly afterward.

This was the schedule for 2022. A tentative Schedule for 2023 was passed out at the end of the week. Matches are planned for a week earlier in November to get some separation from the end of the matches and the Thanksgiving Holiday week. The 2023 final schedule should be on the CMP web site hopefully in early 2023.

I may have to look into coming down that way ..... Perry is fun , but by November I'm ready to do the National Matches all over again.
Modern Military is fun, the president hundred is a blast, you gotta try rimfire sporter

What is the congressional 30 match??

To answer the 2nd part of your question, this is what my week was like :

Monday was started with firearms inspection and trigger weighing to see that all firearms were safe and met CMP rules. This went quickly and smoothly and the inspection personal were very professional and helpful. I participated in the Benchrest Garand Match which was fired at 300 yards.

Tuesday was Rifle practice in the morning. Did not realize how many round you can fire in 2 hours on electronic targets, a bunch ! Afternoon was my 1st Garand/Springfield/Vintage Military/ Modern Military Match (GSMM). This was the 1st match to be used in the "3 Gun Aggregate" and the "4 Gun Aggregate". I used a M1Garand.

Wednesday was started with a GSMM match. I fired this match with an 1903A3, the 2nd rifle I used for the Aggregate total. Then I participated in the 4 person, 50 shot, no sighters, Across the Course, team match.

Thursday was started with the Dixie Double Match, a 30 shot, no sighters, 2 person Across the course team match. In the afternoon, I participated in the Congressional 30. A 30 shot, no sighters, individual, across the course match.

Friday was the M1 Carbine match , then in the afternoon was the CMP M1A match. After the matches were completed for the day, a taco bar was set up inside and everyone was able to eat before the Awards were given out for all the matches fired from Monday through Friday evening.

Saturday was started with a GSMM match, my 3rd rifle in the aggregate total, a US Model 1917, this also completed the "3 gun Aggregate". Later in the day I shot in another GSMM match, this was with a modern military rifle, this was my 4th different type of rifle so the completed my "4 gun Aggregate" . An Awards Ceremony was held that evening for all the matches fired on Saturday and the 3 and 4 gun aggregate totals.

Sunday, the only match was the Vintage Sniper Match and the awards were presented in the Clubhouse shortly after the match was completed.

This was my week of shooting. I could have shot a couple more matches on Saturday as a "re-entry" these would have be for medals only, "re-entry" matches do not count toward your aggregate totals. By skipping a couple of the matches I had time to talk to the CMP Armorer and some time in the CMP Pro Shop.

The weather was below average cold all week and light rains Monday and Tuesday. With the firing line being down below the club house and covered with a very large roof, this weather was an inconvenience but not a large problem.

I personally had a great time. If at all possible I will be back again in 2023. I have shot at Camp Perry since 2002 and plan on shooting there again also. The difference is the atmosphere, Talladega was a lot less stressful , more laid back environment. Everyday was a good day, no "Cease Fires" and no pit duty.

Just a note, i do not work for the CMP nor am I affiliated with anyone at the CMP. I just believe credit should be given when credit is due and this event deserves a lot of credit for a smooth run, no drama, fun event.

You should really look at this event for 2023 if you enjoy shooting the old stuff mixed with the modern equipment.

Congratulations to the young LT for taking high honors among 82 non-distinguished in the rifle EIC. Great shooting young man

Some of you might recognize the last name.
