CMP questions regarding the AR

I have been shooting in an informal match every third Sunday and I enjoy it a lot but now I might want to join the local league so I can shoot more. I'm shooting a RRA National Match AR but I have made a few changes like a Magpul winter trigger guard, I removed the flash hider and put a thread protector in its place and I changed the grip to a Houge. Will any of these changes not be permitted? I'm not looking to go to Camp Perry or anything but I don't want to cause waves either as the new guy.

Also I'm shooting Pmags and from what I could tell those are legal but what if they have Ranger plates? Will I need to switch a few mags back to the regular floor plate?

Thanks,
Ron

Ron: In addition to familiarizing yourself with the rule book, it may be a good idea to talk to those who are running the match. Some local CMP match's are run "by the book", while others will let a few things slide. As just one example: I have yet to ever see triggers weighed at the local match's, but go to Camp Perry and they are definately subject to being weighed, before, during and after the match. Usually if it's a registered match (Service Rifle and/or NRA Hi Power) where the scores are sent into the NRA for Classification, the rule book will be strictly followed, as it should.

Ron,
your rifle with the changes you have listed is legal, as a NRA match rifle. It would not be "legal" as a "service rifle" by rule. It probably doesn;t matter at the local league level especially for a new shooter, but at the state regionals or CP, they will classify the rifle accordingly. It will not be legal for the CMP/EIC matches as they do not have a "match rifle" category. Shoot it and if you get hooked, then put the specified parts back on to be legal.

Thanks for the rules link and the other comments. I think I will give it a go, from what I can tell it is 5 gun ranges that each have a team and only the top 5 scores from each team are counted anyway. I've been shooting a 430-445 out of 500 so I'm sure I'm in no danger of having my scores used ;D so hopefully it won't be a big deal.
Thanks,
Ron

Ron, I feel that none of the changes you've made could be seen as giving you an advantage over a stock SR, so you should be fine shooting in the local matches. Most post-ban SR bbls. aren't even threaded for a flash suppressor, so you should be good to go in that regard. The Hogue PG might set off someone's rule sniffer alarm, but that's easily changed back to the std. A2 grip. I really doubt anyone but an absolutely anal line officer would say anything about the winter trigger guard - but from what I've heard, there are several of this type guys at Perry during NRA week. Dunno about the line officers during CMP week...

Go have fun, and don't give any of this stuff a 2nd thought.

If you are shooting at a local range about all I can add is a possible issue about 20 round magazines as they are supposed to be straight "as issued" types, not curved. If you shoot a CMP "Leg Match" the trigger pull will be weighed.
