CMP Long Range goes E Targets

For 2024 CMP National mid and long range matches will be fired on the CMP’s KTS target system on historic Viale Range. CMP had tested them LR at Butner and again at Camp Perry last June with good results. Should still be room to register for Long Range but the mid range match is likely at capacity.

2024 National Mid / Long Range starts Monday Aug 5 and concludes Saturday Aug 10. Competitors may fire sling (match / Palma), FTR, F Open, AR Tactical.

I'm curious (and hopeful/optimistic) to see how the E-Targets perform at Long Range with the AR-Tactical Rifles ( i.e. 80 SMK 5.56 loads from 20" tube).

I know the CMP increased the Max. Barrel length from 20" (AR Tactical) to 22" this year.......but it is still a challenge to stay supersonic at Sea Level (Texas Gulf Coast) when practicing with the ShotMarker Targets at 1000 yards.

Ohio is a long way for us to travel, we can't make it this year but would also not want to get there to only to discover the E-Targets may or may not score our best 1000 yard loads dependent on atmospheric conditions.

If there are issues with the E-Targets picking up shots......We will have to spend some time with our .243 Win, 6.5CM (AR10's) and the 6x45 (AR15) :)

Good Luck to All this next Week at Camp Perry Mid/Long Range Matches!

The Bayou Long Range Match is NRA, not CMP. I had not considered AR Tactical at Long Range.

Have you shot the Bayou Long Range Match with an AR Tactical rifle? The posted bulletin for that match does not show the AR Tactical. I guess that would be out of competition.

Andy, I’m sorry you’re not going to be there. There will be 4 of us shooting AR Tac this year, but 6 arc and 6.5 cm.

I am a member and RSO at Bayou Rifles.

We have tested a couple of our 5.56 loads at the Club Monthly Long Range Qualification/Squadded Practice Sessions at the 1000 yard line. We tested a 75 ELD-M load at 600 & 1000 that day. Several rounds were used at 600 to confirm the 600 yard elevation, leaving us with only 16 loaded rounds to test at 1000......all 16 rounds were slow (just barely super sonic...but picked up by the ShotMarker E-Targets=1220-1235 fps @ 1000 Yards).

We came to the next LR match shooting "Out-of-Competition"....in reality we could have entered FTR (as a AR-Tac Rifle in .223 or .308 would be perfectly legal in FTR). Same 75 grain ELD-M load, but different weather conditions (Humidity & Temp.). Only the 1st sighter was recorded (1188 fps) and the next two shots were not picked up. We voluntarily withdrew from the match.

Our most accurate load out of a 20" 1/7 .223 Wylde is an 80 SMK that is not quite super sonic at 1000 yards at any elevation that we have tested. This load shoots very good at 1000 yards on pulled targets though.

@Park ranger-It's good to see folks showing up to shoot the AR-Tactical Class. As I mentioned, I wish we were there. My 13 year old (Logan) is not quite ready for a 1000 competition just yet (he has shot some 1000 yard practices though)......He should be ready for Camp Perry in 2025. We will be at Camp Atterbury later this week for the NRA Mid-Range Nationals.......I'm hearing that we may have a good AR Tactical turn out there again this year as well.

Good Luck to All, Keep'em in the 10-Ring and make some memories at Camp Perry!

I believe that the KTS system will detect sub sonic projectiles.

We have shot on ShotMarker, Silver Mountain and KTS Targets at Mid Range. All have performed well if (if calibrated properly)….. with the KYS being the most reliable likely due to being “Hard Wired” DisplayMonitor without necessitating the use of personal devices (tablets/iphones).

The only E-Targets I have experience with at Long Range is the ShotMarker System. I have heard the KTS Targets will pick-Up Subs…. Just have no personal experience with them at Long Range.

I am very optimistic and look forward to them being successfully implemented at Camp Perry Long Range Nationals this week.

Although some of us may miss the Animal Crackers in the Pits…….

The KTS works with subs and if you think about smallbore and airgun, then you have seen it.
RegionRat-This makes perfect sense, I don't have experience with Airgun.....Thank You for the info:)

Based on your comment...My confidence in the KTS Target System picking up a slightly subsonic 75-80 grain bullet just went wayyy up.

I don't want anyone to have the misconception that the reason we (my son's-Logan, Dylan and Myself) are not at Camp Perry this year has anything to do with implementation of E-Targets. The main factors were job related commitments outside our shooting competitions and Logan is just not quite there yet (Ready for 1000 yard Competition).

I must have missed they increased to 22”, and I just got a new 20”.

NRA rules are 20” tube and 15x scope and is only shot at Mid Range with no National Records currently allowed.

CMP rules 22” tube with 16x scope (can be dialed down if greater than 16x), shot at Mid & Long Range.
Ah. I didn’t see CMP stuff. Thanks for the clarification.
